Adultery

Proverbs 6:32

Whoever commits adultery with a woman lacks understanding;
He who does so destroys his own soul.

Good Morning Men.

As we all know, broken families and divorce are running rampant today throughout our society. The devil whom the Bible refers to as a roaming lion looking to seek, kill and destroy is gaining ground on marriage. Over the weekend I came across the tragic news of a dear friend of mine, who may have committed adultery.

How does this continue to happen? Why do we all hear of so many marriages and families being destroyed?

Of course there are many reasons, but the first big one is because God is becoming increasingly more distant in the hearts and mind of man. We have more distractions today than ever before, we have more convenience and ease than ever before. We are more capable on our own than ever before. All leading to the prideful human heart to say why do I need God?

Since God is being removed from our hearts and minds with all of our distractions we have a major moral decline throughout our society. Standards, morals and values have definitely decreased and what used to be wrong is now okay.

There is also pornography. This is very straight forward men, this will destroy you and the your children’s image of you.

Although understanding the reasons for adultery are important, my main goal today is to remind and equip us all to be faithful and victorious in our marriages.

I want to address three groups of people, because within this group I know all three exist.

The first group of individuals is the happily married.

Men, we need to love our wives as Christ loves the church. Do not get complacent, do not stop trying to love your wife more and more each day. Work at it with all your heart. We continue working at everything else. We try to better ourselves in our hobbies and passions and skills; why not our marriages?

Although things are good right now, we are always one phone call, one conversation, one look away from opening the door to sin. The sin of adultery does not happen overnight. It starts over a period of time. We must be on guard constantly. We must be transparent and honest with our spouse, we need men in our lives to hold us accountable, men that will speak the truth even at the expense of offending you. Most importantly we need to pursue a holy and pure relationship with God more and more everyday.

The second group is for those that are just getting by, marriage is not bad, but it’s not good.

Men, very dangerous for us to be in this category. The devil loves when we are here because we are very vulnerable. All it may take is a flirty relationship at work. A old friend looks you up on social media. A casual acquaintance appears to be so understanding as you pour out your heart and struggles of your marriage. The list is endless, men this is bad and dangerous. Greater men than all of us have been here and failed do not dare think you are immune.

The third group is for those that have already crossed that line.

If you have been caught, you are hurting and suffering the consequences of your decisions. If you have not been caught you will. God says that He is not mocked, whatever a man sows that he will reap. I got one word, repent.

This takes immense humility and transparency. However God is the God of redemption and restoration. Although you may lose your wife, your relationships with your children will never be the same, do not continue down this path of destruction. God will make your wrongs right. In the Bible, King David did wrong, adultery led to murder which led to his kingdom being stripped and split. His entire family began turning and revolting on him. His own son sought to kill him. However David repented and remained faithful to God. If you are here Psalm 51 needs to be your anchor.

That’s enough of me talking, here are a few verses that need to be memorized and kept close to your heart. Men, we need to be equipped with the armor of God, read Ephesians 6, memorize the armor of God. Pray for it every day, asking God to clothe you and equip you for the battle each day.

Matthew 5:28

But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

This is heavy right? Take this serious men, if I can be honest, we literally could fail here daily.

How do you conquer this? To put it very simply:

1 Corinthians 6:18

Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body.

Men, just memorize those first three words. Find yourself in tempting situation flee! Run, get the heck out of there. Someone catches your eye, look away, don’t look back, resist that look and flee. These things will open the door to sin men, trust me. Don’t play with this stuff. I heard a pastor once say in a sermon about King David’s affair, “if the devil can’t get you with a bullet he will get you with a Bathsheba.” (2 Samuel 11)

Father give us hearts to serve you, to be honest, holy and humble. To acknowledge our faults and wrongs. Give us the grace and strength to flee from sexual immorality. To be transparent, to work on our marriages daily. If we have fallen and stumbled, Father by Your righteous right hand pick us up and guide us. Cleanse us that we may worship You in spirit and in truth. In Jesus name, Amen!

I thought my husband and I were Christians I recently found out that he has been committing adultery for years. I have proof and I am divorcing him, something I never intended to do. But I could never trust him again, the extent of his unfaithfulness goes beyond an affair to many woman, even when I was ill and he was nursing me back to health. I have been living with someone I did not know and my marriage was not a marriage at all. Pray for me and my family we need all we can get.

    • Mixie57, I am terribly sorry to hear that. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. As painful as this must be, never forget or doubt, that our God is a God of redemption and restoration.
May you draw closer to Him now, more than ever before.

  3. Men and women should keep themselves pure until marriage.
God promises to bring us through trials, tests, and we CAN overcome!
