Fruit of Your Faith

Sermon of the Day: If My Words Abide in You

Genesis 17:10-11,23

10 This is My covenant which you shall keep, between Me and you and your descendants after you: Every male child among you shall be circumcised; 11 and you shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskins, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between Me and you.

23 So Abraham took Ishmael his son, all who were born in his house and all who were bought with his money, every male among the men of Abraham’s house, and circumcised the flesh of their foreskins that very same day, as God had said to him.

Good Morning Men. Within this area of Genesis God is developing and building Abraham in so many ways. God is preparing him for the amazing ministry he has in his latter years.

Following Genesis 15:6 were Abraham’s faith was counted to him as righteousness, which is one of the most important, foundational truths found in scripture. We see that God is expanding upon His promise to Abraham and revealing his future in a way that Abraham has been waiting for his whole life.

Let me lay out a few things chronologically for you. The faith of Abraham was shown in the previous chapter, then God expands on His promise here, and then calls  Abraham to keep a covenant of circumcision with Him.

This act of service Abraham was called to do could not have been easy. This act become very important throughout Jewish history. Verses 10-11 have been taken very seriously by Jewish leaders for thousands of years. Unfortunately the letter of the law had become more important then the sender and origin of the law. However we all can be guilty of this same treason if we are not clear on scripture.

James brings this into the light in James 2:14-26, in fact he quotes Genesis 15:6.

Let’s just keep this real simple. Abraham was credited for righteousness when he believed God, not when he circumcised himself and his family. God delights in our steps of faith, which will produce great and mighty works.

We must constantly evaluate our works, our lives and actions against God’s Word, and in prayer. We must not allow ourselves to become sucked into a work-centered faith. Rather, we want to produce faith-centered works.

I know this may not be a message for everyone, but we all can apply the fact God desires our hearts first. Above and beyond anything you may do or say. Any type of good work, nice gesture or smile is great, but there is no storing up kudo points with God here. God wants our heart, he wants intimacy with each of us. He wants us to worship Him in spirit and in truth, to be holy because he is holy. To be humble and be growing in the fruits of His spirit.

Always remember that works are the fruit of your faith, not the requirements of your faith. This is also not an excuse to not have works.  Lets close with:

James 2:17-18

17 Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.

18 But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works.
