‘In the Beginning God’

Sermon of the Day: Passion for the Supremacy of God Part 1

Genesis 1: 1

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

Good Morning men.

Many of you may be making the year-long journey to read through your Bible this year. If not, my hope is that you are on some kind of Bible reading plan to help steer you and keep you on track this year.

If you are reading through the Bible, most plans will start in Genesis and Matthew. These two books are two of the most important and pivotal books in all the Bible.

So for many of you that may have read through Genesis 1 recently, I have heard it said by several pastors and teachers that if you can get past the first four words in the Bible, you are on your way.

Unfortunately many will get hung up here and be unable to believe that God created the earth. Or that God has no starting point, that God always was. For some it is the creation of this amazing world, and how it was created in 6 days. Or the fact that these 6 days are literal days and the world as we know is less than 10,000 years old. Very contrary to every secular history book.

I have two encouragements for you all today. The first encouragement is for those of you that may be hung up on these first four words.

‘In the beginning God…’

Men think about how vast and amazing creation is. The stars, the ever-expanding universe and it’s vastness. The complexity of the human body. The number of species of animals the fill this earth. Birds and bugs and reptiles to numerous to name and describe. The fact the every human being every born is completely different in looks, fingerprints, DNA, thoughts, etc. I will stop there, I hope you get my drift.

Romans 1:20

For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse…

‘In the beginning God…’

For the second group that has made it past those first four words. You believe it with all your heart and know that God is sovereign over this entire universe that He created.

Well, I love practical application and I read an introduction in a commentary about the book of Matthew from Dr. J. Vernon McGee.

In brief he was talking about something he taught his students to do at night. When your tossing and turning in your bed trying to go to sleep. Rather than count sheep, think your way through the books of Matthew and Genesis. Each chapter has a theme or heading. Think through these chapters, and what their about. This will really help us to get to know the Shepherd. Our great and mighty God.

Several powerful things going on here. Several things going on here that will definitely challenge all of us and grow our faith, knowledge of God’s Word and also grow us in the His grace.

I started a little notepad on my phone with each chapter heading. As I am reading through these chapters right now I am building my list to help me remember these amazing gifts from God. My hope is you will see value in this, and be inspired to do the same thing or similar.

May the Lord give you a heart to seek Him, the desire to ask Him, and the strength to knock for Him relentlessly.
