Sermon of the Day: The Expedience of Obedience

All of these sermons are also available on the podcast app in the apple store. I have been pulling sermons from John Piper with Desiring God, or Adrian Rogers with Love Worth Finding Ministries. For those of you that do not have this platform I have attached the link.

John 14:16

And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever…

Let us rewind some 2000 years, back to the nation of Israel.

Jesus is present on earth with His disciples. There is turmoil all around them, all around the country and throughout the Jewish people. Rome is the political power looking for any excuse to come down hard on the Jewish people. There peace is a rare commodity in the land, there is extreme tension and turmoil towards anyone who follows or professes a belief that Jesus is the Messiah.

Jesus is going through the final preparations with His disciples prior to His death on the cross. Jesus knows He is about to be crucified and as Lord He knows the trials His beloved people will go through.

In the above verse Jesus tells them when He leaves He will give them another helper. This helper is also known as the Holy Spirit, or Holy Ghost in some translations.

In R.C. Sproul’s book ‘Who is the Holy Spirit’ he gives us some background on the word “helper” or in some translations “comforter”. The Greek word for helper, that this was translated from was the word parakletos, the source of the English word was paraclete. The prefix, “para”-, that means “alongside”, followed by the root word “kletos” which has the meaning “to call”.

R.C expressed that he feels the New Testament translation of the word parakletos , does not do it the justice it deserves. So lets look at it a little deeper.

So parakletos was someone who was called to stand alongside another person. Technically the word was applied to the family attorney who was hired by the family to always be on call. Whenever a family problem arose he would be summoned to their immediate help and assistance.

This is exactly who the Holy Spirit is to the Christian. We are part of the family of God and the Holy Spirit is always present, always alongside of us to help us and guide us through life’s trials and challenges.

The word “comforter” came from more of a Latin-English connection. The Latin word is “comfortis”, which has a very different meaning than our word comfort. The prefix “com-” means “with”, and the root word “fortis” meaning strong. So the original word was better translated “with strength”.

In the context of what the early Christians went through, in the context of what most followers of Jesus Christ go through in this world. The Holy Spirit is there to come alongside and empower believers. To strengthen them as they go out to battle for life and survival each day. To ensure they will truly be “more than conquerors” as the Bible says.

This really fascinated me because of how different perspectives can be. How a slight change of wording, with a different perspective can be an entirely different scenario.

Of course R.C Sproul, in his book does a far better job, way more depth than I did here to explain this and give more context. However I hope that I was able to give you a snapshot, and some thoughts to meditate on and evaluate in your view and relationship with God and the Holy Spirit.

The book is free on Ibooks if your interested.
