Praise and Gratefulness

Sermon of the Day: Healing of Body, Soul & Mind

Colossians 3:15

And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful.

Good Morning Men!

This morning I want to share what I have been learning and what has been stirring in me in the areas of Praise and Gratefulness.

These two topics have so much depth, so much content and so many scriptures we could draw from for support. I feel the Lord led me to the above verse to best summarize what I am learning and meditating on in the realm of praise and gratefulness.

I am reading a book right now called How to Win Friends and Influence People. It is a really awesome book, and I would encourage all of you to read it. It is a great book in building up our people skills. Not sure about you, but Lord knows I need help in that area.

I finished a chapter the other day on praising others. How important it is to genuinely praise others. The principle to be learned at the end of this chapter was to praise every improvement in a person, no matter how small.

Of course this seems like common sense. We all love to be praised for our hard work, skill, ingenuity and everything else.

However I started to see this in a different light.

I really would love to get better at this. I really would love to learn to start seeing more things in every one around me, to have comments of genuine praise and affirmation. I want to look for things in others that I can praise them in.

Then I started thinking about what would limit me from doing this, or what would inhibit me from doing this with certain people. Some of you may see it already, our infamous friend that always finds his way into our conversations…pride.

I really started to think about this praise element. Why we don’t do it like we should or maybe why we may struggle with this skill. It all boils down to pride and insecurities.

So where does God come in?

So when we have the peace of God ruling in our hearts, like the above verse says we are content in Him. Then, if we receive praise from others our hearts rejoice in God not-self. If we do not receive praise, even if we really deserve it, it’s okay because we were not doing it for the praise. When we can get to this place, do you know how much easier and naturally genuine praise will flow from your own mouth to others?

Action steps.

First of all we need more of God. We need to seek Him more, spend more quality-quiet time with Him.

Secondly, lets start looking for ways to praise those around us. Our wives, our children, co-workers, and so on. Especially for those of you in leadership roles. How often are you praising those around you? For their growth? dedication? skill? accomplishments? No matter how small it is, be genuine, be specific and praise them.

This will not only build yourself in the Lord as you learn contentment in Him, but it will build the relationships you have with people around you. So you can be a brighter light for Christ in this world.

To be continued…part 2 on Gratefulness.
