Not Because of Who You Are, But Because of Who I Am

Sermon of the Day: The Resurrection Body

Micah 7:18-20

18 Who is a God like You,
Pardoning iniquity
And passing over the transgression of the remnant of His heritage?

He does not retain His anger forever,
Because He delights in mercy.
19 He will again have compassion on us,
And will subdue our iniquities.

You will cast all our sins
Into the depths of the sea.
20 You will give truth to Jacob
And mercy to Abraham,
Which You have sworn to our fathers
From days of old.

This is a powerful, and deep passage of scripture. I just read a four page commentary from Dr. J. Vernon McGee expanding on this passage, so to give it’s full duty will not happen on this message. However, I can share how this passage is helping me.

First of all there is no god like our God. There is only one God, and the only way to Him is through His son Jesus (John 14:6). All others are man-made gods and idols. Just in case you missed that, all other gods or man-made gods and idols.

God’s compassion and mercy are so abounding. To be forgiven by God is a miracle that came at a unspeakably enormous price. Jesus, the son of God chose to lay down His heavenly robe and give His life as a ransom for all. His blood, my brothers, paid for our sin and all sin that ever was and ever will that come under the submission of faith in Christ.

What this thought reignited in me, was severe gratefulness. A gratefulness that is so tied to who I am, my unworthiness, my sinful thoughts, words and actions. My constant failures, yet God looks at me and says, Come. I will forgive you, not because of who you are, but because of who I AM.

Men, if each of us could really wrap our heads around that, our lives would be radically changed forever. We offer God nothing, He offers us everything. He saves us because of His name. He is holy, righteous, and never wavers on a promise.

Men can I challenge you, to write this concept on a card, or notepad somewhere were you can look at it everyday. Multiple times per day.

I will forgive you, not because of who you are, but because of who I AM.

Or

Titus 3:5

He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit…

Mediate on this fact that despite the way we think and act, God still loves us. Despite how many times we have rejected Him by our words or actions, He says come.

Psalm 106:8 NIV

Yet he saved them for His name’s sake,
to make His mighty power known.
