Hearing the Joyful Sound

Sermon of the Day: Rescue the Perishing

Psalm 89:15-16

15 Blessed are the people who know the joyful sound!
They walk, O Lord, in the light of Your countenance.
16 In Your name they rejoice all day long,
And in Your righteousness they are exalted.
17 For You are the glory of their strength,
And in Your favor our horn is exalted.

Good Morning Men! This psalm had several nuggets that I really enjoyed. Many verses previously were talking about the sovereignty of God.

That concept alone always blows me away, the fact that God is completely sovereign over this entire universe and everything in it. Wow!

However this morning I wanted to focus on the above passage. I want to break down each verse individually and what they mean for the Christian today. If I could summarize it in a nutshell, this passage is about the Christian influence and focus.

Verse 15:

Do you know the joyful sound of the Lord?

The sad thing is brothers many of us do not know His voice as well as we should. If I were to hear my dad yell right now I would instantly recognize his voice. I have spent enough time with Him to recognize it.

As blood bought Christians we have the power to hear the voice of the God of the universe. What a joyful sound to hear. What a blessing to have God speak directly to your heart.

The Bible teaches that God is light. God is holy, God cannot lie, God is all-knowing and all-powerful. When we walk contrary to any of this we no longer are in the light.

There is a direct connection with hearing the joyful sounds of God, and remaining in His light. Walking against the ways and darkness that tempts your hearts everyday.

Verse 16:

Men, can we be honest right now. What do you rejoice in? What brings you the most joy today?

Is it the name and power of the Lord God? I am sad to say that this is probably not the case for many of us. Everything else around us gets us far more excited than the name of God.

Verse 17:

Here is how we can change that! The Bible teaches us that our righteousness is as filthy rags before God (Isaiah 64:6)! In fact this filthy rag is translated from the Hebrew as a used menstrual rag. I know its graphic, but its the truth. When we try to be righteous on our own effort, merit and strength that is how God views it.

But when we recognize that we are sinners. Filthy sinners, that desperately need a savior. We now depend on His righteousness. Then and only then can God move in us and through us. That is why God says He opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. Only a humble heart can fully surrender the reality of our sinful nature. Daily.

Now all these points beautifully come together in God’s Word. It is all about God’s glory. Our strength to overcome, to be victorious, triumphant and longsuffering is all for His glory. Not our own. God is so delighted and so overjoyed when we can make this connection in our heart, our mind and our lives.

I pray this message sinks deep into your heart.

With Love, your brother in Christ.
