Broken and Contrite Heart

September 20, 2016

Sermon of the Day: The Mighty and Merciful Message of Romans 1-8

Psalm 66:16-20 NLT

16 Come and listen, all you who fear God,
and I will tell you what he did for me.
17 For I cried out to him for help,
    praising him as I spoke.
18 If I had not confessed the sin in my heart,
the Lord would not have listened.
19 But God did listen!
He paid attention to my prayer.
20 Praise God, who did not ignore my prayer
or withdraw his unfailing love from me.

Good Morning Men!

I know with all my heart that every single one of you reading this would love to be in this position. In the midst of your trial, you cried out to God, He not only heard you but revealed His unfailing love to you.

Although every single line here has tremendous power and thoughts we could expand on. My eyes are stuck on the hinge of this verse.

How many of us have cried out to God for help before? I’m sure every person reading this has.

Do we know how to praise Him as we cry out? Not all of us may know how.

This is where knowing scripture, and hanging on the promises of God come in. As believer of Jesus Christ we have the living Word of God. When we speak His promises, when we believe in His promises there is power.

In times of fear we cry out with verses like Isaiah 41:10.

In times of depression we cry out Psalm 139:17-18.

In times of uncertainty we cry out Jeremiah 29:11-13.

For starters. Big difference here men, then praying without the promises of God.

Then the final swing of the hinge is confession, let me leave you with two verses:

Psalm 51:17

16 You do not desire a sacrifice, or I would offer one.
You do not want a burnt offering.
17 The sacrifice you desire is a broken spirit.
You will not reject a broken and repentant heart, O God.

Luke 3:8

Prove by the way you live that you have repented of your sins and turned to God. Don’t just say to each other, ‘We’re safe, for we are descendants of Abraham.’ That means nothing, for I tell you, God can create children of Abraham from these very stones.

May the Lord give you a broken and contrite heart, that seeks Him above everything else.
