Want to Know Your Purpose?

September 3, 2016

Psalm 39:4-7

Lord, make me to know my end,
And what is the measure of my days,
That I may know how frail I am.
Indeed, You have made my days as handbreadths,
And my age is as nothing before You;
Certainly every man at his best state is but vapor. Selah
Surely every man walks about like a shadow;
Surely they busy themselves in vain;
He heaps up riches,
And does not know who will gather them.

“And now, Lord, what do I wait for?
My hope is in You.

Good Morning Men!

This entire chapter blew me away yesterday, but I really connected with the above passage.

I talked to someone yesterday about this passage, and long story short. The conversation led to me explaining that how I feel this verse applies to my life is about purpose. Living with purpose.

I explained to this guy that many people believe in God, or some higher being but they don’t live their life in that way. We allow ourselves to get to caught up in our daily distractions.

However I feel that if we truly can live with this mindset, if we truly desire to seek our frailty, and our purpose it will radically change the way we live, act and think.

This is a lot bigger than just saying you want to change. Do any of you remember what yesterday’s sermon (The Greatest Thing in the World: An Overview of Romans 1-7) said about what is necessary to make real change? If not check it out.

Busying ourselves in vain is terrifying to me. We have so many distractions, some are obvious and some blind side us very slowly. I won’t pick on any, there are way to many for us men these days, but be honest and evaluate what you do with your time. Evaluate what those activities to do build you personally, build your marriage and build your relationships with your kids…for starters.

As far as heaping up riches, most of us may think that doesn’t apply to us. However if you read yesterday’s devotion, it’s not a dollar amount that gets God excited. It’s a heart issue. So whether you make 40k or 400k, God wants a generous heart that trust Him over money. So as the Psalmist says, “My hope is in You”.
