For Your Names Sake

September 1, 2016

Psalm 31:3

For You are my rock and my fortress;
Therefore, for Your name’s sake,
Lead me and guide me.

This Psalm is clearly describing a difficult time in the life of David. If you have ever read through the books in the Bible that describe his life, you will know, if anyone knew dark times it was David.

Although no one is looking to kill us, as they were for David we all still have our struggles. Our struggles and trials are real and they may vary in severity, but they are relevant for each of us.

What floors me, is the heart of David. He is all about God, I interpret David’s mindset as, do everything to me and for me God…FOR YOUR NAMES SAKE!

Men that is huge! When we can get to that place, no matter the blessing, no matter the trial we have absolute trust in the sovereignty of God Almighty. That His ultimate purpose and plan for our life is for His ultimate glorification. Which the Bible refers to as being Christ-like.

In our selfish nature we tend to get sidetracked with our glorification. We want people to think highly of us, to respect us to be impressed with every facet of our lives. The problem is this type of delusion is never satisfied. God created in such a way, that the only way to be satisfied in life is to be anchored in Him and His Will for our lives.

As one of my favorite pastor’s, John Piper, always says, “God is most glorified, when we are most satisfied in Him.”

The Bible commands us many times, and in various ways to do all things for the glory of God. This is the same thing David is saying here.

Men, how are you navigating life?

Are you led by your reputation? Your personal honor?

All through this Psalm David talks about his trust and hope in the Lord.

Men my encouragement is that you continue to grow in the Lord so that at the root of all you do, you desire to glorify the name of God.

That in anything, you will be able to say from the depths of your heart:

For You are my rock and my fortress;
Therefore, for Your name’s sake,
Lead me and guide me.
