Numbers 8:23-26

23 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 24 “This is what pertains to the Levites: From twenty-five years old and above one may enter to perform service in the work of the tabernacle of meeting; 25 and at the age of fifty years they must cease performing this work, and shall work no more. 26 They may minister with their brethren in the tabernacle of meeting, to attend to needs, but they themselves shall do no work. Thus you shall do to the Levites regarding their duties.”

Good Morning Men!

We find ourselves in the book of Numbers today.

The Israelite’s have recently completed the tabernacle, and God is speaking to Moses about all the laws for the people. We all have heard of the ten commandments, but God actually gave 613 commandments to the His people.

Seems staggering, but the funny part is God has written countless commandments on our hearts. We just call it following our gut, ever think about where that comes from?

So one of these commands God gave was about when a Levite, who serves in the presence of the Lord is to retire. This doesn’t have much use for us today, but what I believe with all my heart is that verse 26 is a powerful verse for us to take notice.

Let me paraphrase it for you.

When you retire, be sure to check on those around you. Those around you, young and old, need your help. Encourage them, help them and minister to them.

The American dream is to work hard, build up a nice comfortable retirement. Then, retire and enjoy the good life. Travel, leisure, golf and every other enjoyable and comfortable past time that man can think of. Although many of our retirement plans may be different from each other and different from what I just described, our culture has ingrained a mindset; you’ve earned it, now its your time to relax!

Brothers, this could not be farther from a biblical truth. If you are a child of God, if you are a born-again believer in the Lord Jesus Christ, you are a servant. A servant of the most high God. The God that created heaven and earth. His calling on your life is to share the gospel of Jesus Christ everywhere you go. This can look different for all of us, but men we are called to serve. We are called to think of others better than ourselves.

So whether you are in retirement, headed to retirement, or still can’t spell retirement, start seeking a servant mindset today. The Holy Spirit is the counselor to every born-again believer. He will guide you into all truth, led by the Word of God as you read and grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ.

The problem with the American retirement dream, is it now says I am no longer here to serve but to be served. It’s my time to enjoy.

Men, I tremble in fear of this mindset.

Don’t get me wrong, God wants us to have fun and be happy. Don’t focus on the things we can or cannot do. Focus on the mindset. What is your mindset?

You either have a mindset to serve or a mindset to be served.

One brings life and joy, the other brings selfishness and decay.

Seek God whole-heartedly, and read His Word passionately.
