Great in God’s Eyes

June 22, 2016

2 Samuel 22:36-37

36 “You have also given me the shield of Your salvation;
Your gentleness has made me great.
37 You enlarged my path under me;
So my feet did not slip.

There were so many verses that powerfully spoke to me from this chapter. However the above verse really grabbed me. Especially the statement: “Your gentleness has made me great”.

We have a very informative description of the life of David throughout the Bible. We are able to read through his many challenges, struggles, failures and successes. It safe to say that David was a mans-man. He was very rugged, tough and brave. David also was not afraid to move forward in anger. Sometimes at great expense.

As old king David he now looks back and sees how God’s gentleness has made him great. This gentleness came in the form of many trials, sleepless nights, physical and mental pain, lost loved ones, division, separation of kingdoms…to name a few.

Although our trials and pain may look somewhat different at times, God is trying to change us. God wants to make us great in His Eyes. Let me make that point clear, God does not want us great in our own eyes or the eyes of those around us. God wants to make us great in HIS eyes. There is a very big difference.

We know that David was great in God’s eyes because God said David was a man after His own heart. This is a tremendous statement, illustrating the tremendous humility of King David.

My sinful nature forgets this at times, and I get this twisted. God opposes this type of pride in all of us. God hates it, despises it and when do not learn to allow God to cleanse us, change us, and renew our mind this will be the results:

2 Samuel 22:28

You will save the humble people; But Your eyes are on the haughty, that You may bring them down.

Men, seek a right relationship with the God of the universe. The God that longs to be your rock, your salvation, your refuge (2 Samuel 22:2-3). The LORD is worthy to be praised (2 Samuel 22: 4). His way is perfect. His word is proven. He is a shield to all who trust in Him (2 Samuel 22:31).
