Judge Accurately

June 6, 2016

Psalm 82:1-4

1 God stands in the congregation of the mighty;
He judges among the gods.
How long will you judge unjustly,
And show partiality to the wicked? Selah
Defend the poor and fatherless;
Do justice to the afflicted and needy.
Deliver the poor and needy;
Free them from the hand of the wicked.

This Psalm has always had me a little confused. Especially if you continue to read down through verse 6.

So today after I read through this Psalm I followed with a commentary from the late J. Vernon McGee.

The Psalmist here is talking about human judges, the power and responsibility they have. They are sitting in the seat of God, as we all know God is the judge, and only God judges with complete righteousness and justice. Anytime someone takes a seat of judgement they are putting themselves in the seat of God.

Is this completely wrong?

Absolutely not. For example God has appointed judges to rule over our courts. To enforce law, to condemn the guilty and so forth. The danger is when those in seats of judgement have no regard or fear for the creator of the universe.

There is another example J. Vernon gave, and that is with parents. God has commanded children to obey their parents. As parents we are commanded to not provoke our children to wrath, but to raise up our children in the training and admonition of the Lord (Ephesians 6:4).

What happens when we don’t?

You got it, guilty and we will have to face those consequences whatever God declares.

J. Vernon gave a gut wrenching example. He talked about a pastor in the south that was referencing this exact situation of parents raising up their children. Since God has given us this command we are now sitting in His seat. God almighty has entrusted parents to raise up these dear children He loves so much more than we do.

The story goes something like this;

A man died and ended up in hell, he began hearing a voice that sounded like his son. The father called out, and asked: Son is that you? The son answered and said, yes father. The father then asked, what are you doing here son? The son answered, I followed you.

As many of us may know hell will not have this type of casual conversations. Jesus made it very clear, hell will be indescribably worse. However I hope you can grab the main point. Whether you like it or not, you as a parent have been placed in a position of God.

J. Vernon says in Thru the Bible pg. 82, Psalm 82;

” God says to the judges, “Be sure you judge accurately. Ye are gods, and all of you are children of the Most High.”

Is this time to freak out and panic?

Absolutely not. Time to seek God like never before. Grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ. Humble yourselves before the Lord being honest and real in all our faults, sin and shortcomings.
