Exodus 34:14

For you shall worship no other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God…

Jealous – fiercely protective or vigilant of one’s rights or possessions.

How can we have a perfect and holy God, be jealous at the same time?

I feel safe to say that the majority of us, if not all of us will probably look on the trait of jealousy and see it as a negative trait. I highly doubt there are a lot of people standing in line when they are handing out jealousy right?

Lets look at scripture and find comfort in knowing why our God is a jealous God.

Exodus 20:3-4

“You shall have no other gods before Me.

“You shall not make for yourself a carved image—any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth;

This stems back to the issuing of the ten commandments, the first two (must be pretty important?) address the very issue we are on. There was no such thing as atheists back then, people always found the need to worship something. The thing we don’t normally see is that when you worship empty things, you end up empty also.

If we keep things very simple, lets rewind back to the times of Moses. They would create golden images of things like animals, worship them and make sacrifices to them. Now lets say the whole tribe, and community puts all their hopes, dreams, prayers and requests to this golden image god. These golden images are man made and have no power to save, heal or restore. So what happens to this whole community and people as their golden god never pulls through? Very simply they get hurt, they are let down and eventually will feel defeated and discouraged.

There are many of us today who still worship actual physical idols, but there are many who worship idols of all shapes and sizes. Whether people, kids, places, things, ideas or even feelings that can be the focus of our worship today. The list is endless, but anything you pursue more than God and His Son Jesus Christ is an idol and behind every idol is a demon.

God created us, so He knows us better than we know ourselves. God knows how dangerous and destructive our pursuits and passions can be if God is not at the center and foundation.

The Word of God teaches us that if we search for God with all our heart, if we diligently seek Him we will find Him. The choice is ours, and the fruit of those choices will direct the course of your life and the lives around you.

May the Lord give you a renewed mind, a heart desiring Him alone, desiring His holiness and purity.

Be consumed with the Jealousy of God, allow it to surround your heart and mind and never let you fall for empty worship and superficial love.
