Jesus Christ our Redeemer

May 3, 2016

Ruth 3:3

Therefore wash yourself and anoint yourself, put on your best garment and go down to the threshing floor; but do not make yourself known to the man until he has finished eating and drinking.

On first glance there doesn’t appear to be anything spiritual going on here. This just seems like good ole fashion romance.

However we couldn’t be farther from the truth.

In the book of Ruth, obviously Ruth is the main character. Ruth is a foreigner and technically an outcast, now living among God’s people. Ruth is a picture of you and me, a hopeless sinner.

Then there is the man Boaz. Boaz is in this book is a picture of the Lord Jesus Christ. Boaz is the kinsman redeemer of Ruth. In other words, by mosaic law, he was the next in line to marry this widow, to protect the land of her deceased husband and his name through children.

We also have a kinsman redeemer, that is the Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus paid a price to redeem us from death, in fact He paid a price for the entire world. With His own blood and body. When we accept Him as our redeemer we are now free. Free from sin, and death dear brothers.

Within the above verse we have four illustrations of what it takes to become a blood bought follower of Jesus Christ.

  1. Wash yourself. John 3 teaches us that we need to be born again. We need to be regenerated. In other words we need a spiritual bath.
  2. Anoint yourself. We cannot do anything a part from the Holy Spirit of God. We must be anointed by His Holy Spirit as we come to believe in Jesus.
  3. Put on your best garment. The Bible describes our sins as filthy rags, but when we come to put our faith and trust in Jesus He clothes us with righteousness.
  4. Go down to the threshing floor. In those days this was a very important place for the closing of a harvest. In a sense this was where the rubber met the road. The same is true for us, we may say we believe in Jesus but have we ever personally given our lives to Him? Is their fruit in your life of repentance? Do you believe the Bible to be true? Have you believed in your heart that Jesus died for your sins? Rose three days later? And is still alive today and forevermore? Then there is one more step, go to your own threshing floor and surrender your heart to Jesus.

Turn to Him men. Seek Him and you will find Him. Do not be conformed to this world men but rather renew your mind that may prove what is good and acceptable to God.
