Naomi the Merry Sunshine

May 1, 2016

Ruth 1:16-17

16 But Ruth said:

“Entreat me not to leave you,
Or to turn back from following after you;
For wherever you go, I will go;
And wherever you lodge, I will lodge;
Your people shall be my people,
And your God, my God.
17 Where you die, I will die,
And there will I be buried.
The Lord do so to me, and more also,
If anything but death parts you and me.”

Ruth-And-Naomi

Good Morning Men.

The book of Ruth is a powerful little book with several key messages, and this morning the Lord revealed a nugget to me that challenged my heart personally.

Obviously this book has a primary focus on this wonderful women named Ruth.

However, Naomi whose name literally means “pleasant” is going to be the focus here.

In J. Vernon McGee’s commentary he calls her merry sunshine. I totally agree, and hidden behind the beautiful story of Ruth, there is a strong and amazing women named Naomi.

Without getting into too much detail, although I would love to, this family left God’s country to go to God’s garbage can. God calls Moab His “washpot” in Psalm 108:9 which can be translated as garbage can.

Men what we have to know, and sometimes we have to learn this the hard way; if you are a child of God, blood bought, born-again follower of Jesus Christ. When you leave God’s country there is sure to be discipline. Just like when my son does not listen to me, there will be consequences because I love him. Although us with such greater love, and discipline is perfect.

God knows whats best for us, and that is to be following Him whole-heartedly.

This family left Israel during a very dark time. When things got rough they bailed. We as Christians are just like this today.

But we need to learn to anchor into the promises of God, and we only can do that if our delight is in the law of the Lord, so we will be like trees planted by the rivers of water (Psalm 1:3).

The names of Naomi’s sons are important to mention in the backdrop. Mahlon means “unhealthy”. Chilion means “puny”. Despite have two sickly boys, Naomi lives out her character as merry sunshine.

Then Naomi’s husband dies. This will usually end any sunshine in the eyes of a widow. Not Naomi, she continues to be merry sunshine.

How can I say she continues to be true to her character, merry sunshine?

Let’s revisit the above verse, think about what Ruth is telling her. Why would this beautiful women give up everything she knows, and everything she has to follow Naomi?

Ruth from day one saw something different. Ruth, the beautiful women married Mahlon, the unhealthy one. How does that happen?

Moab was known for idolatry, they worshiped all kinds of wicked false gods. Scripture teaches they even sacrificed their young children to the fire god of molech. Ruth grew up around this type of worship. Then she saw the God of the Bible through Naomi.

“Where you go, I will go…”

The land of Israel had a quite a reputation in the Old Testament. Remember this land was conquered by the people of God, and all the surrounding nations knew that. Not too many outsiders wanted to go there.

“Your people shall be my people…”

Moabites and Israelites did not get along and they did not think well of each other. This was overshadowed by the love Naomi showed Ruth.

“And your God, my God…”

Would you want to follow a weak God? Have you ever seen a weak christian that speaks that he follows God, but nothing in his life shows that? I know I don’t want to follow a God like that.

Naomi was a pillar of strength and love, she illustrated by her life and the way she overcame tragedy of her concrete faith in the one true God.

Oh that the LORD would be so gracious to pour His grace into each and every one of us. That our light will shine so bright in this dark world, that others believers and non-believers alike would want to know our God. They want to know Him because we live out His truths each day, when things are good and when tragedy strikes.
