The LORD is With You, You Mighty Man of Valor

April 11, 2016

Judges 6:15-16

15 So he said to Him, “O my Lord, how can I save Israel? Indeed my clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house.”

16 And the Lord said to him, “Surely I will be with you, and you shall defeat the Midianites as one man.”

The focus of this chapter is on a man named Gideon. This passage spoke directly and personally to my heart. Lets check out this fellow Gideon:

  1. V.11 “…Gideon threshed wheat in the winepress, in order to hide it from the Midianites.” We see here that Gideon was not afraid to work. Even in a hostile work environment, when all your hard work could get completely taken and snatched right from your hands. Gideon chose to work, he did not wait for the handout, nor play ‘woe is me’ the victim role and do nothing, because they are going to take it anyway.
  2. V.11, V.12 – ” Now the Angel of the LORD came and sat under the terebinth tree…”; “And the Angel of the LORD appeared to him…”. Dear friends, this is none other then Jesus Christ Himself revealing Himself to our hard-working friend Gideon.
  3. V. 12 – “The LORD is with you, you mighty man of valor!”. Wow! What a compliment. But most importantly do you see how God views this man? In my my eyes, I see someone amazingly big and strong, powerful, and smart; in other words a real stud. However we know this not to be the case as v.15 shows us. The least of all brothers, and from the weakest clan. Wow, for from pedigree in the eyes of man; but not in God’s eyes.

Men there is so much for us to see here, but in a nutshell:

  1. God sees us very differently then we see ourselves. Remember that God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.
  2. God loves to use the weak things of this world, to glorify Him. Why? So He gets all the glory and credit.

This spoke to my heart personally because my wife and I are planning on homeschooling our children this upcoming school year. My wife will be leaving her career of 15 years, and she has been working for 20 years. We feel like Gideon. Too weak, too unskilled, not enough experience, patience and so on. But four years ago God called us to do this. He has allowed us to make it through many obstacles. Even though just like Gideon we have many more to go.

This story of Gideon encourages me. My hope is that it will encourage you also.

Is God calling you to do something outside of your comfort zone? Something you feel weak, and intimidated by? Do you feel God tugging you into something, but you know there are so many others that are so much better and more equipped than you to do the job?

I believe with all my heart God loves His Gideon’s. Grace flows to the humble, because they stay on their knees seeking Him constantly. Trusting in Him not their own skill, strength, or words.

Two things we can apply today: one, be a worker. Wherever God has called you to be work it with all your heart as if unto Jesus Christ your master. There is favor with all, when we can learn this. Second, seek God constantly. Gideon continued to ask God to show him that it was for real. Keep seeking God as you continue to press forward. Don’t stop what you are doing, but seek Him constantly through the process.
