Go And Get It

Joshua 17:17-18

17 And Joshua spoke to the house of Joseph—to Ephraim and Manasseh—saying, “You are a great people and have great power; you shall not have only one lot, 18 but the mountain country shall be yours. Although it is wooded, you shall cut it down, and its farthest extent shall be yours; for you shall drive out the Canaanites, though they have iron chariots and are strong.”

Good Morning Men!

When I first read through this passage, I did not understand what the take home message was. When I read God’s Word I am always looking for the interpretation, and also at least one application.

So I turned to Dr. J. Vernon McGee’s commentary on this chapter and found a great take home message for us all.

In life we all tend to desire things. Some of these things are tangible, like a new home, or car. Other desires are a little more difficult to wrap our hands around; like having a great marriage, or raising great kids.

No matter what your desires are, if we are honest with ourselves we all want the easy handout. Very few individuals will truly want to work harder and longer to achieve the same desire if they don’t have to.

This tribe of the nation of Israel wanted a greater parcel of land for their people. However the area that was on the board was going to require a great deal of hard work and fight. God had already promised them the entire land, so they should have known they would be in God’s will if they pursued it.

The same goes for us, when we are within the will of God, when we align with His Word, and put our trust in His promises, there is one major obstacle; ourselves. Of course the devil is a roaring lion looking to steal, kill and destroy; but many times he just laughs at us because we destroy ourselves. Many times our destruction is done in our minds, before we even take one step of action.

Men God has promised us with every spiritual blessing (Ephesians 1:3). However they are not just handed out for free. We need to lay hold of them, work towards them, continue through our desires with the right way of achieving these blessings of promise.

Here is a great quote from Dr. J. Vernon’s commentary on Joshua 17:17-18:

” Another classmate of mine once complained to a professor about a book he was required to read. He claimed it was as dry as dust. Well, said the professor, why don’t you dampen it with a little sweat from your brow? This is a great argument for hard work.”

Be blessed men. Whatever those desires in Christ are, Go and get it!
