Practice Righteousness

February 24, 2016

1 John 3:6-7

Whoever abides in Him does not sin. Whoever sins has neither seen Him nor known Him.

Little children, let no one deceive you. He who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous.

At first glance this may seem like a very intimidating and even confusing section of scripture.

When we are told here to not sin, this does not mean a perfect sin free life. We all know first hand that is impossible, any attempt at this would be a very fake and superficial pharisee type lifestyle. Look at what 1 John 1:8 says:

If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

This type of sin John is referring to is habitual sin. Sins of habit,  or sins by nature that we may be continuing to commit on a regular basis. Of course these all vary, some are more obvious than others, it all comes down to the purity of our hearts and minds.

Luke 6:45

A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.

This is a great reminder that if we are only concerned with outward actions, we are really only fooling ourselves.

Praise God for verse 7 above. We are told that if we practice righteousness we are righteous.

You ever hear people refer to what doctors do as the practice of medicine? Why? Because nobody has it all figured out. The body is far to complex, far to many variables involved for a doctor to truly know everything and get everything right every time.

In the same way we are to practice righteousness. Of course we need to learn a lot just as doctors do. Just like doctors, it needs to be a life long study of continuously reading the right materials to grow and expand in knowledge. However with the christian walk we equally need application. Only storing up head knowledge can actually get dangerous.

Praise God for Luke 6:45 in those dangerous times! Constant assessment of our hearts, and the fruit of our thoughts and words will help us remember what we are supposed to be practicing.

The Bible teaches us that God is faithful and just to wash us, cleanse us and forgive us of all our sins        (1 John 1:9). For those of us in habitual sin, we must repent.

Acknowledge, confess and turn from these wicked destructive ways. For whatever we sow, we will have to reap (Galatians 6:7). Do not forget that. It may not be today, or tomorrow, but undoing bad decisions is inevitable. God has given His word on that.

For those struggling to practice righteousness, we need to constantly come to the foot of the cross. Confess our sins to God, continue to grow in the grace and knowledge of Christ. Desiring to be more like Him each day. Not acting, but desiring, asking God constantly to help us grow closer to Him. Asking for a desire, asking for wisdom in what direction to go. Asking for clarity on what things need to change in our lives, in our minds and in our hearts. Constant pleading and praying. It never ends dear brothers.

However God does promise that He will complete the work in which He has started in each of us (Philippians 1:6).

May the Lord God grant us all a heart to follow Him recklessly. Giving us Christ Exalting faith!
