I, The LORD Search The Heart

February 9, 2016

Jeremiah  17:9-10

“The heart is deceitful above all things,
And desperately wicked;
Who can know it?
10 I, the Lord, search the heart,
I test the mind,
Even to give every man according to his ways,
According to the fruit of his doings.

Good Morning Men.

Over the last few weeks I have been a part of conversations where, how people view themselves is very contrary to this scripture. I know this is not uncommon, in today’s society we are taught and influenced to actually think the complete opposite of this scripture towards ourselves. It is a very effective tool the devil is using against the church.

I have heard the argument that people will avoid Christianity because they want no part in a God that puts you down, and tells you how wicked you are.

That is a lame excuse. As a society we have become so soft, and weak that anything that does not make us feel good about ourselves we do not want to hear.

God does not tell us we are wicked so that we walk around with our heads down, filled with emptiness and sorrow. God wants to open our hearts and minds to this reality so that we look to Him. The alpha and omega.

Have you ever went into a jewelry store and looked at a diamond, do you know why they put that diamond on a black piece of cloth? To magnify the beauty of that diamond.

In the same way, God’s holiness is magnified against our sinfulness. Our need for Him is to be that much clearer when you see your sin against the Holiness and perfection of God.

Now look at what verse 10 says above: God searches the heart and tests the mind.

How do you take this type of information? Do you reject it? Do you elevate yourself over others, leading to entitlement, pride and so on? Or are you convicted by it?

The scariest part of this whole passage, is God says He will give every man according to His ways and allow the fruit of his doings.

Have you looked around at how much adultery, lying, stealing, greed, divorce and everything else there is going on around us? That is, God giving men up to their own wickedness, deceitful schemes and fruit.

Maybe your reading this and thinking I have never done anything major. I have never cheated on my wife. I have never stole a large amount of money, or killed someone. Men this is the worst mindset you could have. This is pride in full effect. This mindset ignorantly leads you to believe you have total control over your life. That’s dangerous. Greater men than all of us have failed. Read this passage.

So what do we do?

Repent. This means to turn from.

God can only work with a heart that is completely broken and willing to admit that. Psalm 51 says God will not despise a broken and contrite heart. That means fully surrendered and submissive to God, His consequences, His judgement. Your not being weak, there is nothing to be ashamed of. God already knows. Its just between you and Him. And remember where sin abounds, grace abounded much more.

Romans 6:11-14

11 Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts. 13 And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. 14 For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.
