Is Getting Saved the Highlight?

January 11, 2016

1 Corinthians 3:11-15

11 For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12 Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, 13 each one’s work will become clear; for the Day will declare it, because it will be revealed by fire; and the fire will test each one’s work, of what sort it is. 14 If anyone’s work which he has built on it endures, he will receive a reward. 15 If anyone’s work is burned, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire.’

To answer the above question: No.

Let me explain.

Every time I read through this passage, I fearfully evaluate and assess areas of my life. As a believer in Jesus Christ we should not desire to just make it to heaven. This choice is described in verse 15, and I believe with all my heart this will be far more devastating than we can ever imagine.

Here God is calling us to build on the foundation of Jesus Christ. If we may, lets back track a little bit and do a few snapshots of what this means and how we get there.

Ephesians 2:8-9

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.

  • Faith Saves. Nothing else will save our soul but believing in the Lord Jesus Christ. I heard a comment recently that the reason for being nice to a certain individual, is so God will let him into heaven. Nothing but faith in the death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ will begin the miracle of God in your heart.

Romans 12:2

And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

  • Renew Your Mind. Now that we are saved, we must renew our minds. We must not think and operate the      same way we did. This is a process, but it is a necessary process in order to live the abundant, fruitful and life-bearing purpose God has for each and every one of us.

Ephesians 4:20-24 NLT

20 But that isn’t what you learned about Christ. 21 Since you have heard about Jesus and have learned the truth that comes from him, 22 throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. 23 Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. 24 Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy.

  • Put On The New Man. This new nature is also referred to as “The New Man” in other translations. This renewed mind, starts to change who we are. Changing who we used to be, what we used to think and act like. Many times in our society it’s viewed negatively, to change who you are for someone or something else. Let’s be real though, think about some of the ways you used to think, and even still think today…do we really want to remain that way!? Didn’t think so.

John 4:35-36 NLT

35 You know the saying, ‘Four months between planting and harvest.’ But I say, wake up and look around. The fields are already ripe for harvest. 36 The harvesters are paid good wages, and the fruit they harvest is people brought to eternal life. What joy awaits both the planter and the harvester alike!

  • Labor of Love. What do you work for? We all work for something. Of course pay our bills and take care of necessary expenses. What about after that? The call of the Christian is not to get saved just to get saved. Or what about the saying: “live every day like it’s your last”. What does that really mean? Live for yourself? Dear friends no where in scripture does God teach us that. The call of the Christian is to be saved, so that, we share the amazing news of Jesus Christ with others and live a life of eternal hope that reflects the glory and goodness of Jesus Christ in ALL we do.

This labor of love will now connect us back to our foundation building in the next piece. Stay tuned.
