One Way or Many Ways

December 13, 2015

John 14:1-6

“Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. And where I go you know, and the way you know.”

Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?”

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”

The promises in these verses are staggering to me. Absolutely exciting, and mind-blowing. What Jesus is promising to all those that believe in Him is really unfathomable. Yet we all are challenged to live and believe this.

I want to try to argue this from a non bias perspective, because most of the world does not believe Jesus is the only way.

Scenario 1:

Lets say what Jesus is saying here may not be true. Especially the part where He is the way, and there is no other way to the Father…Or God Almighty.

So saying that this is not true, the contrary would be there are many ways to God and heaven. Which in essence means that we all will be in heaven, and only the really bad people will not make it. This would also have to mean that there is no absolute truth and life here on earth is really what we should be living for.

Also, Jesus was actually not the only way and all those who believed that will still make it into this broad gated heaven, but  they were just foolish and misled here on earth. Unless they fall into the really bad person category. Which since there is not absolute truth, is subject to interpretation.

Final Summary not really a big deal either way. Everybody finds a way.

Scenario 2:

Jesus is the only way, and He has to be the only way because He is also the truth and therefore could not lie about being the only way.

Those that believe this will be with Him as He says in verse 3. Those that do not believe Him, will not be with Him.

Final Summary: Very big deal if you do not accept this, and very clear-cut if this is true. The end result of disbelief is catastrophic.

These two scenarios as I’m sure you know, represent the two main views of the world. Jesus is either Lord, King of Kings, Alpha and Omega or He is not.

The problem comes if Jesus really is all He says. In this argument there really is no harm or foul if Jesus is not who He says He is.

But if Jesus really is the way, the truth and the life and the only way; how tragic is unbelief? how many people are wrong?

Is this a gamble worth taking? This is an eternal gamble that has very drastic consequences for the unbeliever.

My hope and prayer is that more will come to trust and know Jesus as the only way to the Father, and may the Lord also use those of us who believe to be a fruitful witness for the Kingdom of Heaven.
