Dead or Alive

December 4, 2015

John 6:53

Then Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you.

Dead or alive?

This was a common theme I kept reading this morning.

For most of us, when we hear the words dead or alive we think of our bodies right?

Well in this verse Jesus is talking to the Jewish Leaders, and telling them; because they don’t believe in Him, there is no life in them. In other words, they are dead.

Jesus is referring to spiritual life and death. Whether or not a person is alive spiritually.

In fact to make this point clear, let me paraphrase. Jesus is saying that anyone who does not eat His flesh, or drink His blood is dead.

Jesus is telling them to eat His flesh, and drink His blood in order to have this spiritual life. This may sound weird, in fact it was so difficult for many to understand that:

John 6:66

From that time many of His disciples went back and walked with Him no more.

Jesus was not trying to be politically correct, nor was He trying to get as many people to follow Him as possible. What Jesus desired then and now was true followers of Himself.

According to Jesus a true follower will eat His flesh and drink His blood. What does this mean?

For me I just look at this very simply, when we eat or drink something it touches our lips and mouths and travels through every part of our insides. We fully consume it, we accept the whole thing and place it in our mouth. We not only enjoy the flavor, the texture of our foods, but we also enjoy the nutritional benefits. We get strength, energy and so on from our foods.

Jesus is saying He is so much more than that;

Matthew 4:4

But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’”

John 6:48

I am the bread of life.

My prayer is that all of you will not only desire, but eat of the bread of life. Secondly that this bread is so good and so irresistible that you will be so overjoyed to share it with others and consume it in all you do.

Know God. Make Him Known.
