Yearns Jealously

November 27, 2015

James 4:1-10

Where do wars and fights come from among you? Do they not come from your desires for pleasure that war in your members? You lust and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and war. Yet you do not have because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures. Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. Or do you think that the Scripture says in vain, “The Spirit who dwells in us yearns jealously”?

But He gives more grace. Therefore He says:

“God resists the proud,
But gives grace to the humble.”

Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Lament and mourn and weep! Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.

Wow! What an amazing passage of scripture. There is everything here, from harsh words, to encouragement, to rebuke. I listened to a sermon this morning on this passage from Francis Chan and I wanted to highlight some of the things that really stood out to me in this passage.

In a nutshell this passage is discussing the problem that we all have. Our sinful nature that constantly seeks fulfillment outside of the glory of God. We place so many things in front of God, some of us do it with blatant disregard for God. While others of us ask God for everything but Him.

Paul goes so far to call us adulterers! Why? As Francis Chan put it; “Asking the One who loves you to give you something to replace Him!”

How crazy is that? When we do this we make God our enemy. We do this, not God, but  many of us like to blame God.

God is so crazy about us. He loves us so much that He gave His only Son to die for all of our sins. Past, present and future. He is so jealous for our love, He Yearns Jealousy. He knows that our ultimate fulfillment is only found when we put Him above everything else. He is so passionate about this, that He yearns jealously for our love and attention.

We really do not know love like this, we may have a slight idea for those of us parents. But honestly there is no comparison.

Follow the steps in verses 7-12 men. Remember that God’s Grace is directly connected to our humility. Our humility hinges on our dependence towards Him. If you rarely think to seek God’s help, wisdom, guidance than you are doing it all on your own strength…one of the many symptoms of a proud heart.
