Seek and Desire Wisdom

November 23, 2015

James 3:13-18

13 Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by good conduct that his works are done in the meekness of wisdom. 14 But if you have bitter envy and self-seeking in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth.15 This wisdom does not descend from above, but is earthly, sensual, demonic.16 For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there. 17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy. 18 Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.

This passage is centered around wisdom. Wisdom is applied knowledge. Wisdom is not something our society seeks, or teaches to seek. We have become a society that seeks knowledge. We all want to run to the PhD’s, the so called experts, the very intelligent scientist and so on. However to seek knowledge alone is very un-biblical.

Opening statement wants to know how many of us reading this feel we have wisdom. It is easy for someone to claim they have wisdom. Look what scripture teaches though, wisdom is found in those that show wisdom through their conduct, or behavior. This, is done under the blanket of meekness, or gentleness.

According to this passage there are two types of wisdom; Earthly and From Above. Earthly wisdom is rooted in envy and selfish ambition. Wisdom from above is pure, peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy, good fruits, impartial and no hypocrisy.

Obvious which one is better. Lets all evaluate our lives, and be honest with ourselves. Where is your wisdom?

Glory to God, we do have a solution.

James 1:5

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.

In 1 Kings 3, God gave Solomon a choice, to seek anything he wanted from God. Solomon sought God for wisdom. The Bible says God was pleased with that answer. God blessed Solomon with such wisdom, the Bible says no other man was as wise as Solomon.

Seek this pure and meek wisdom brothers. Be men that lead well, and love well. Be fathers and husbands, friends and co-workers that show wisdom by the conduct and fruit you produce.
