James 2:12 ESV

12 So speak and so act as those who are to be judged under the law of liberty.

This morning I watched a short sermon from Francis Chan going through James 2:1-13. I really wanted to share what I got from it.

This part of the chapter is highlighting the sin of favoritism. In all honesty I struggle with this sin, but I do know God is bigger and greater and wants to heal and set free any that struggle with this sin.

The first big thing James does is he calls sin, sin. Many times we don’t like to call our junk sin, which leads us to be stuck in it, and many times grow deeper and darker in it.

In verse 4 James says when we show partiality, we become judges with evil thoughts. Then in verse 9 he says if we show partiality, “you are committing sin, and are convicted by the law”.

That is a heavy, direct blow that many of us do not want to face. Myself especially, I really didn’t even want to write on this topic.

However, if we want to grow in our relationship with Jesus, if we want to be more like Him, for His glory, we have to face these things head on. Call them what they are, and seek God whole-heartedly for restoration and healing.

The real kicker for me was the above verse, as Francis Chan put it, he talked about how a lot of times we act, think, say and do as if we don’t stand before God. As if God doesn’t see or know these things we do, think and say.

James say’s rather the contrary in verse 12, that we need to act everyday as if we are going to be judged.

Why?

James 2:13 ESV

For judgment is without mercy to one who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.

We all desperately need mercy.
