Do You Have Peace?

July 22, 2015

Luke 2:14 NLT

“Glory to God in highest heaven,
and peace on earth to those with whom God is pleased.”

We all are looking for peace.

Individually and globally. Where does peace come from? That can be argued in today’s day and age, so I wanted to share two definitions, and some scripture.

Then you can ponder; What does peace mean to you?

Lets first look at the biblical definition of peace:

Copied from biblestudytools dictionary/peace

The biblical concept of peace is larger than that and rests heavily on the Hebrew root slm, which means “to be complete” or “to be sound.” The verb conveys both a dynamic and a static meaning”to be complete or whole” or “to live well.” The noun had many nuances, but can be grouped into four categories: (1) salom [l’v] as wholeness of life or body (i.e., health); (2)salom [l’v] as right relationship or harmony between two parties or people, often established by a covenant (see “covenant of peace” in Num 25:12-13 ; Isa 54:10 ; Ezek 34:25-26 ) and, when related to Yahweh, the covenant was renewed or maintained with a “peace offering”; (3) salom [l’v] as prosperity, success, or fulfillment (see Lev 26:3-9); and (4) salom [l’v] as victory over one’s enemies or absence of war.

Salom [l’v] was used in both greetings and farewells. It was meant to act as a blessing on the one to whom it was spoken: “May your life be filled with health, prosperity, and victory.” As an adjective, it expressed completeness and safety. In the New Testament, the Greek word eirene [eijrhvnh] is the word most often translated by the word “peace.”

Now the general definition of peace:

1. Freedom from disturbance; quiet and tranquility.

2. Freedom from or the cessation of war or violence.

Now for the Bible’s view on peace:

Isaiah 9:6 NIV

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

John 14:27 NIV

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

Philippians 4:6-7 NIV

6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Men I want to encourage you to search your heart for the understanding of peace? Do you have peace? If not how will you find peace in your life?
May the Lord, bless you and keep you.

True peace comes only from the LORD!!!! No amount of money, earthly possessions, or earthly relationships can bring peace to a person. Only through a personal, intimate relationship with Jesus Christ can one find and experience true peace.
