Dead to Sin…Alive in Christ

June 29, 2015

Romans 6

Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

11 Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts.

21 What fruit did you have then in the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. 22 But now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life. 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

The other day I listened to a few great messages by Pastor James MacDonald that are all about change. Or as the Bible refers to it, being transformed. To make it even cooler, yesterday in church my pastor covered the same portion of scripture, with the same general message. Amazing how the Holy Spirit of God works!

The teaching was pulled from Romans 6, some of the power verses are listed above. Although, I would encourage you guys to read through that whole chapter, especially if this speaks directly to you.

One of the key phrases that was said in the message by Pastor James that really stood out to me was; “If your faith has not changed you, then it has not saved you.”

That is pretty heavy, and for some, you may disagree. However lets remember that all throughout scripture, we are called to bear fruit. Fruit that is worthy or shows our repentant hearts…and ways.

Has there been change in your life towards God and the fruit of holiness? Do you still think, act and react the same way you did 1 year ago? 5 years? or more?

We all have areas that are inhibiting us from growing closer to Jesus. We all have something we do not want to give up on. As I write this I feel my own struggles swelling to the surface.

Take some time to look at and write down the areas you struggle with. What is blocking you from growing closer to Jesus? We must be specific. Pin-point these areas in our hearts and surrender them to Christ.

I just wrote about something similar (https://sierramurphy17.wordpress.com/2015/07/03/growth-and-grown-up-stuff/)! I used Ephesians 2:1-3, but very much enjoyed getting redirected to Romans 6.
