Not For Your Sake, But for My Holy Name’s Sake

May 25, 2015

Ezekiel 36:22

“Therefore say to the house of Israel, ‘Thus says the Lord God: “I do not do this for your sake, O house of Israel, but for My holy name’s sake, which you have profaned among the nations wherever you went…”

March 2 quotes

I have been reading through the book of Ezekiel, and I keep coming across verses like the one above.

God keeps reminding the people, through the prophet Ezekiel that the good things He is doing and plans to do is not for their sake. The Good things are being done for the sake of His holy name.

There is so much context to fill in here, but I want to focus on the application of this verse rather than the history and complete context of this chapter and book today.

As you may already know, when it comes to scripture there is only one interpretation of every scripture. However there are an infinite amount of application for each scripture. This happens by the Holy Spirit of God, who lives and dwells amongst those that are His. Or as the bible refers, those that are saved.

We as human beings have a tendency to do things for self gain. We can even get really good at it, where we do something for someone else, although the end result, whether this day or the next, actually comes around for our benefit.

We should work at seeking the Lord to purify our hearts, so that we want to do things for His name’s sake.

How do you purify your heart?

Psalm 119:9-11

How can a young man cleanse his way?
By taking heed according to Your word.
10 With my whole heart I have sought You;
Oh, let me not wander from Your commandments!
11 Your word I have hidden in my heart,
That I might not sin against You.

We want to have Godly marriages, not so others think we are special. Rather, that God is glorified in our marriage. We should work at being the best parents, the best in our jobs and so on; so that others will see Jesus in us.

Having this heart, having this drive all funnels down to what is the treasure of your heart? What are you living for? When our ultimate treasure is Jesus, when we live for the name and glory of Jesus, when we realize that life and earth is temporary and not important compared to the eternity and reality of heaven and hell, everything will change in our heart and mind. This results in a life long transformation of the way we live, speak and act.

Do you have a heart for souls? Do you believe the Bible to be true, that those who do not follow the words and commands of this holy book will be separated from God in hell for eternity?

I hope and pray you do. I hope and pray your life reflects this.
