Obey My Voice

May 1, 2015

Jeremiah 7:23-24

23 But this is what I commanded them, saying, ‘Obey My voice, and I will be your God, and you shall be My people. And walk in all the ways that I have commanded you, that it may be well with you.’ 24 Yet they did not obey or incline their ear, but followed the counsels and the dictates of their evil hearts, and went backward and not forward.

The other morning I was trying to encourage my 16-year-old daughter in her walk with Jesus Christ. I was trying to express the difference to her between whole-hearted devotion and half-hearted. She had a question for me, something along the lines of; Dad how do I follow Jesus with all my heart?

I then reminded her of the greatest commandment from Matthew 22, and gave her a few analogies relating to her and her mindset. But this morning this verse jumped out at me as another answer for her, and others like her that have that same question: How do I follow Jesus with all my heart?

The above verse gives us two very simple, easy to understand steps, with two very nice promises.

1. Obey my Voice

What is God’s Voice?

God’s voice most predominantly comes from the pages of the Bible. As we spend time in God’s Word, we are to be prayerfully meditating and growing in this holy scriptures. That is why Matthew 4:4, says that we live on every word that comes from the mouth of God.

God’s Voice may also come into our hearts. That “still small voice” that speaks to us when we are going about our day. That inner feeling, inner thoughts that tell us to do something,  or tell us not to do something. When this happens for me, I try to pause and say God is that You? Are you telling me to do that? Or telling me not to do that?

The cool thing now is when we can learn this, God promises to be our God, He promises that we will be His people! That is a great promise.

2. Walk in the ways that I have commanded you

God has given us commandments of life to follow throughout His Word. The stubborn, rebellious heart says; why do I gotta listen, and change me ways cause God says so? The sad thing about this type of heart is that it is ignorant and prideful, to think that your way is actually better than God’s way. That is like the toy telling the manufacturer that he knows what is best for him.

God says in Isaiah 64 that He is the potter and we are the clay. Get the picture? We must trust His hands, that He wants to mold us and make us into the best piece of clay that He can.

Then God promises that it will be well with us. All of us want this. We all want life to be well and pleasing. God promises this. This isn’t a promise about challenge free lives, or disappointment or even major loss, like the loss of a loved one. This is a promise that all things work together for His good, pleasing and perfect will.

The last verse shows us what happens when we choose not to follow His Ways. We move backward not forward. God has given us all free will. The choice is yours.

May the Lord stir your heart to hunger for Him, and obey His voice and walk in all His commands.
