Spirit and Truth

April 27, 2015

John 4:23-24 NLT

23 But the time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship him that way. 24 For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.”

This verse is taken from the passage where Jesus is speaking to the woman at the well.

First of all Jesus, who was a Jew;  chose to go through an area called Samaria. Pious Jews in that day had wanted nothing to do with Samaritans. They were viewed as inferior, where deep roots of distrust and dislike were very prevalent.

Secondly, Jesus chooses to speak to a woman, and as the story unfolds, an adulterous woman who probably did not have the greatest reputation in her town. Jewish men were not supposed to speak to women, especially an adulterous one.

So here we have Jesus breaking all the traditional rules of their modern-day Judaism, or religion.

How ironic!

Our verses above start to talk about worship, and how we should worship. In the eyes of pious Jews, Jesus had already broken a few major rules. Which in their eyes would void anything else.

Jesus makes a statement about true worshipers. Which confirms what many of us already know; if there are true worshipers then there are false worshipers.

So Jesus says we must worship God the Father in Spirit, because God is Spirit. What does that mean?

Well God is Spirit and therefore is not confined to one place. God cannot only be found at the holy churches. God is not limited to an area, a country, a specific building or a specific people. God is Spirit, and therefore is Omnipresent, Omniscient, and Sovereign.

Worshiping God in Spirit means that it is not what we do outwardly that worships God, or in other words impresses God. Many False Worshipers, or fake worshipers love to show many signs of outward worship. They want people to notice the things they do and say. The sad thing with this kind of worship is that it is in vain, God has no delight in it. The Bible teaches us many things about this type of worship, that will not be in your favor. So if you recognize some of this in your worship, or in others it is missing the second piece to the puzzle…Truth.

Worship God in truth is being 100% honest with ourselves. Being 100% in-line with God’s Word. Having relationships were you can be 100% honest with your struggles, short-comings, weaknesses and failures. Having all these things in place provides the check and balances to keep us from straying in our own interpretation and individual biases. The truth does hurt sometimes, however as Christians it is what God demands of us. The great thing is that Jesus promises us that the truth will set us free!

How many of you want to be free? Free from false worship? Free from false ideas, and actions that do not align with God’s Word?

Pray in the quietness of your heart. Pray anywhere you can focus on God. Ask God to help you be truthful, in all you do, and to reveal His truth from His Word.
