Are You Sealed?

April 4, 2015

2 Timothy 2:19

Nevertheless the solid foundation of God stands, having this seal: “The Lord knows those who are His,” and, “Let everyone who names the name of Christ depart from iniquity.”

Many times throughout the Bible, God is referred to as The Rock. The Rock of refuge, and of strength.

Living in Kona, we are surrounded by rocks. There are rocks that are literally immovable, these rocks are so large and solid that they seem to just be a part of the earth itself. That is the visual I have when the Bible describes God as The Rock.

The same goes with this verse, describing God’s ways: that God’s ways are built on a solid foundation. A foundation that does not change or waver, a foundation that is immovable and indestructible.

Seals in previous times were a way to conceal a message for it’s intended reader. If the seal has been tampered with, it would be clear and obvious to the recipient. God has placed a seal on His children. He knows who are His.

But how do we know if we are His?

The last verse gives us a very big clue that can be backed by tons scripture. If you claim the name of Jesus, if you claim to be a Christian, if you claim to be a son of God, then you must turn from sin.

Sin will always separate us from God’s Love and Grace. Sin will always keep us from truly growing closer to God. God says in His Word that darkness can have no part in light.

The Bible says when we are His, we are no longer slaves to sin, but slaves to righteousness.

What does that mean? That we are perfect all the time, and have to be perfect all the time? Absolutely not! It means that we obey the voice in our head that said we should look away, that we should leave, that we should not be a part of this and so on. That voice is the Holy Spirit. He wants you to be a slave to that voice of righteousness, turning you from the snare of sin. Many times the Apostle Paul would refer to himself as a bondservant of Jesus Christ. This meant that he was a slave a servant to the Words and testimonies of Jesus Christ. The same must be true for those who are His.

Brothers, bear fruit worthy of repentance.
