Choose Life

March 6, 2015

Deuteronomy 30:19

I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live;…

The book of Deuteronomy is the home stretch for Moses, the leader of God’s people; The Israelites. Due to their sin, rebellion and hard hearts, God has sent them wandering through the wilderness for the last 40 years. However, now the time has come for God to hold Himself to His promise He made. That God will deliver them into the “Promised Land”, which is now present day Israel.

This verse literally jumped out to me this morning as my wife was listening to her audio bible, I heard two words that honestly resonated down into my soul…CHOOSE LIFE!

I believe with all my heart and soul that this verse has as much power, and truth for us today as it did for the Israelites some 4000 years ago.

Heaven and Earth are still witnesses before God.

Matthew 5:34-35

34 But I say to you, do not swear at all: neither by heaven, for it is God’s throne; 35 nor by the earth, for it is His footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King.

In our very conscious, we know the differences our actions will bring forth.

Romans 2:15

(…who show the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and between themselves their thoughts accusing or else excusing them)…

Choosing life has powerful effects on this life and the next.

John 4:14

“…but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.”

Choosing life is not only important for our lives, but for you husbands, and for you fathers; these decisions will have ripple effects into the lives of our wife and children. We must exemplify choosing life, we must live it, we must teach it, and we also must be honest when it is hard or doesn’t make sense.

The other day I listened to a sermon by Pastor Adrian Rodgers, titled “How to Build Stability into Your life”. (For those of you that downloaded the podcast app go check it out!) Pastor Adrian was talking about a preacher named Billy Sunday, Reverend Sunday said there are a few steps we can take in this life to avoid having the title “backslider” on our tombstone. Here are three very practical and realistic applicational steps.

1. Spend 15 minutes a day listening to God speak through His Word.

2. Spend 15 minutes a day speaking to God through prayer.

3. Spend 15 minutes a day talking with someone about Jesus.

None of us are too busy for this application. In no way are we also limited to this time frame, if you hunger for more, Praise God, do more! But we must at least aim for this. Watch as God will give you a hunger for more of Him and His Word!
