Build Spirit Muscles

February 14, 2015

Galatians 5:16-17 NLT

16 So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves. 17 The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions.

Galatians 6:7-9

Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life. And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.

Good Morning Men!

This passage would be understood more completely by reading both chapters. But for the reading impaired like myself I pulled out two of the main nuggets.

We all struggle against the flesh. As Christians we must understand that this battle will take on many personal opponents, but never completely end while we live on this earth.

As a born again believer in Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit of God lives within you. This Spirit begins to renew your mind, reshape your thoughts and if you are submissive to IT, reshape your decisions and actions.

Personally I have always tried to train myself to treat my spirit like a muscle. The more I listen to IT, the more I build IT, and seek to work on IT the stronger IT becomes. Which in turn leads me to be more victorious against my sinful flesh, otherwise the Bible teaches; my flesh will lead me to corruption, or as some bibles translate, decay and death. Worse than physical death is spiritual death.

How do we build this “muscle”?

It starts by putting those around you first. It starts by doing the right thing even when it’s hard or unpopular. This is what the Bible calls : dying to self.

Men, we must fight in doing good. Do good in your marriages. Do good in your homes. Do good at work. And most importantly as verse 9 teaches above, do not grow weary and do not lose heart.
