Be Separate

Deuteronomy 12:2-8

“When you drive out the nations that live there, you must destroy all the places where they worship their gods—high on the mountains, up on the hills, and under every green tree. Break down their altars and smash their sacred pillars. Burn their Asherah poles and cut down their carved idols. Completely erase the names of their gods!

“Do not worship the Lord your God in the way these pagan people worship their gods. Rather, you must seek the Lord your God at the place of worship he himself will choose from among all the tribes—the place where his name will be honored. There you will bring your burnt offerings, your sacrifices, your tithes, your sacred offerings, your offerings to fulfill a vow, your voluntary offerings, and your offerings of the firstborn animals of your herds and flocks. There you and your families will feast in the presence of the Lord your God, and you will rejoice in all you have accomplished because the Lord your God has blessed you.

As we have been covering some things the Lord has pressed on my heart about worship, the Holy Spirit revealed something about worship to me in an unexpected place.

Some of you have heard this before, but when dealing with scripture there is only one interpretation, but many application. That is why scripture says that God’s Word is alive. It will constantly reveal truth for you to apply in your life.

Anyways…back on track.

So this morning I read the above passage and it really spoke to my heart about worship, and the things we do for pleasure and entertainment.

The context of the passage is about the Israelite’s about to move into the promise land (Nation of Israel some 4000 years ago), after God chastised them through the wilderness. This was due to 40 years of stubborn, rebellious hearts. So Moses is preparing them according to the Word’s and ways of God.

What stood out to me, is these people were moving into a land that was filled with pagan worship. Basically religious, and cultural practices that were detestable in the sight of God. God told them in Deuteronomy 9:5 that God was not giving them the land because of their righteousness, but because of the wickedness of the people in the land.

As Christians God calls us to be set apart (Leviticus 20:26). Today in our culture and society this is very difficult. We are surrounded by things, that are detestable in God’s sight.

So what are you doing in your life and in your household and amongst the things your children are a part of to separate yourselves? God commanded the Israelites to destroy everything in the land. So why do we still dabble in things that do not honor and bring glory to the name of Jesus Christ?

Especially as men, we must lead by example. We must lead our marriages and our homes in love and purity. Music is a major distraction. I have especially noticed how music is so distracting for the youth. Because of the ease, and availability, they are always listening to music. This may seem harmless at face value, but as an example, listening to music that has nothing to do with Jesus for four hours, means our children can easily go four hours or more without one thought of God.

Is this extreme? Yes. But so was moving into the promise land, and completely removing all the idols, all their places of worship, everything. But God commanded His people to do it, because He knows the power of these distractions.

We are bombarded everyday with images, ideas, agendas, and other things which are not pleasing to the LORD. The LORD instructs us to be different. To be that light in a dark world. We are to set ourselves apart and through our actions bring glory to the LORD.
