Law or Faith?

January 27, 2015

Acts 17:30-31 NLT

30 “God overlooked people’s ignorance about these things in earlier times, but now He commands everyone everywhere to repent of their sins and turn to Him. 31 For He has set a day for judging the world with justice by the Man He has appointed, and He proved to everyone who this is by raising Him from the dead.”

As most of you know, we have gone through a video series of the Ten Commandments. As many of you have said, and I couldn’t agree more; the videos were awesome. I learned about the commandments, but I also learned a lot about the Love of God, His amazing design for this world and so many other things as I hope and pray all of you did also.

However as we close out this series I wanted to make sure we are all very clear on something.

Although God Almighty has given these powerful ten commandments for us to follow and live by, both some four thousand years ago, and today (as we learned). We must understand that living by these moral codes alone does not grant us salvation. If you read through the books of the Torah (first five books of the Bible written by Moses), you see that it is impossible to follow the law of God 100%.

James 2:10 NLT

For the person who keeps all of the laws except one is as guilty as a person who has broken all of God’s laws.

God designed it this way so we would not focus on the law as a means to salvation, and work to attain that. Rather we would focus on Jesus and what Jesus represents.

So what does Jesus say?

John 11:25 NLT

Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying.

All throughout the gospels Jesus uses different approaches with different types of hearts (people). Although the central theme is belief in Him, Belief in His Word, and the fruit of these beliefs show in our lives.

Look at what Paul and Silas say in Acts 16:31 NLT, when asked by the jailer what he must do to be saved:

They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved, along with everyone in your household.”

Do we need the law? Absolutely!

Do we need it to be saved? Absolutely not!

The law of God, whether the ten commandments or all the commands from Genesis through Deuteronomy were set in place as guidelines for us to live by. Why? Because God truly knows whats Good for us, and whats not. And Yes He does know more than us, even though some times we think He doesn’t.

Jesus also says in Matthew 5:17 NLT

“Don’t misunderstand why I have come. I did not come to abolish the law of Moses or the writings of the prophets. No, I came to accomplish their purpose.”

So if you haven’t done so already, as our opening verse commands; Repent of your sins, or get rid of them, and turn to Jesus. Trust in Him as your personal Lord and savior. Only then will you avoid that day that is set, that day of judgement and wrath that is coming.

Amen!!!! Christ is the fulfillment of the law. All the law and the prophets pointed to Jesus. Without His death and sacrifice for our sins we would have no salvation.
