Ten Commandments

Exodus 20:3-17 (paraphrased)

The Ten Commandments

“You shall have no other gods before Me.

“You shall not make for yourself a carved image…

“You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.

“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.

12 “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you.

13 “You shall not murder.

14 “You shall not commit adultery.

15 “You shall not steal.

16 “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

17 “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house;…

Good Morning Men!

How many of you know the Ten Commandments?

I would be so bold to guess many of us don’t.

I don’t know them all by heart, or in their correct order either. But I have been working on memorizing them, and trying to learn more about them. I would like to encourage all of you to do the same.

Why is this important?

Well several reasons, but we wont get into them all now. Over time we will dive and dig a little deeper into the importance of this holy and powerful list of commandments.

For starters though, we have today the beauty and power of the Holy Spirit. The Bible teaches us that the Holy Spirit is our counselor, and will lead us into all truth. The Bible also teaches us that God has inscribed His law on our hearts, some verses say that He has written it on our hearts.

So, why a list?

This list leads us that believe in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior into a standard of absolute truth. Today the culture and mindset is that you can live by your own relative truth, basically whatever feels good to you.

The problem is, God is a righteous and holy God and wants us to be holy. God says in,

Leviticus 20:26

And you shall be holy to Me, for I the Lord am holy, and have separated you from the peoples, that you should be Mine.

God has also said,

Genesis 6:5

Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

Without getting to deep and to long-winded today, based off of these verses, we are wicked and evil, and God is holy. So how would it be possible for us to lead and guide ourselves along truth and good morality without a standard set by Almighty God?

Grace and Peace to all.

Left to the dictates of our own hearts without a foundation of absolute truth in and through Jesus Christ will lead to destruction.
