Living in the Light

October 20, 2014

1 John 1:5-10

This is the message we heard from Jesus and now declare to you: God is light, and there is no darkness in him at all. So we are lying if we say we have fellowship with God but go on living in spiritual darkness; we are not practicing the truth. But if we are living in the light, as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from all sin.

If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the truth. But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we are calling God a liar and showing that his word has no place in our hearts.

Lets pull out a couple of facts from this passage.

1. This is a direct message spoken by the mouth of Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world.

2. Eye witness testimony of not only this teaching of Jesus, but eternal life that has been manifested (verse 2) to these men (and also any who believe on the Lord).

3. God is 100% light. In order to be in fellowship with God it is impossible to have habitual unrepentant sin in our lives.

4. If we confess our sins to God, the blood of Jesus will cleanse us from ALL sin.

So how do we apply this verse in our lives.

The first thing we must do is analyze our lives for darkness or sin. Do you have any sin that you are ignoring, justifying or pretending doesn’t exist. This sin(s), may be active or it may be something from your past that you have never brought to the ears of God through prayer. God already knows everything about your life, and everything in your heart; why do we act like He doesn’t know?

If the above does not apply to you, we must must still constantly confess are daily sins before the Lord. I’m pretty sure your just like me, every thought that comes into my mind and heart is definitely not always God pleasing. That is where I believe verse 10 comes in, if we do not have any obvious sins, we still sin daily in our thoughts and hearts and we must constantly be cleansed and renewed.

The whole point of Christianity is a process of changing us to be more like Christ each day. It does not happen overnight, but we should definitely be taking steps closer to His Light each day. The Word of God changes us if we read it daily and allow it to renew our minds and transform our hearts (Romans 12:1-2). Prayer is the necessary tag team partner with the Word of God. Prayer is God’s way of enacting His Will upon our lives.

As my Pastor taught yesterday in church from the book of James. We must be Doers of the Word. If the Word says it, we must do it.

Lets be Doers of God’s Word, not pretenders.
