Fiery Trials

October 7, 2014

1 Peter 1:6-7 NLT

So be truly glad. There is wonderful joy ahead, even though you must endure many trials for a little while. These trials will show that your faith is genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold—though your faith is far more precious than mere gold. So when your faith remains strong through many trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world.

What is a trial according to this text?

A trial according to this text, is something difficult in life that will truly test your faith.

I believe sometimes we can get this a little mixed up.

When we are walking outside the will of God, when we are doing things our own way, trials are bound to come. However these are not trials that test are faith, these are consequences for doing things foolishly or outside of God’s Will. Sometimes those are the same, and sometimes they are separate.

If you continue reading 1 Peter 1, you will see how we as blood-bought, Sons of God should live, verses 13-16 give a very clear description.

Now lets say you are doing pretty good, working towards aligning your life with these verses but things are not going well, or so you perceive. I believe this is where we now step into the fiery trials that God allows us to go through so the genuineness of our faith may be tested, strengthened and increased.

The Bible never promised a smooth life, it never promised things will always go our way.

But, It does promise that the Lord will never leave us nor forsake us (Deuteronomy 31:6).

For us fathers, we know how much we love our children, we know that when our children need to be taught something we will do whatever it takes for them to learn an important lesson ( or at least we should be doing this). This concept is the same with God, He alone knows whats best for us. We are just like our children, we think  we know what is best, especially when what we really want is the least painful experience.

God says No. You are going to go through this, I need you to rely on My Word, My Promises and I want to see how much you really trust me. I want to see your faith in action.

Men we must really not get discouraged in trials (God’s Trials, not the ones we made). We must really see our trials as building blocks for our lives. We must really believe that Jesus Christ is so much more than everything this world has to offer and throws at us.

Yesterday my kids and I were singing this song, Jesus at the Center, and there is a verse in there that says, “Nothing else matters, everything revolves around you, Jesus you’re the center…”. I explained this to my two daughters and really wanted them to grasp this statement. They were singing, and they know it, but I wanted them to really believe it. As I told my daughter, If we really, really believe this, our hearts and our minds will shift, and we will truly be able to rejoice in our trials (James 1:2), and know that on the other side of this trial God has our best interest.

For those of you unsure if your trials are of the Lord, honestly assess your heart and your actions that led to your particular trial. Was God truly first in that action or decision? Would those actions line up with verses 13-16 of this chapter? If so great, if not lets accept responsibility, and start seeking the Lord’s Will for you. That comes through waiting on the Lord, to hear His voice through prayer, or through the reading of His Word.

God truly wants to speak to you and through you. We just have to invest the time in Him first. It takes being consistent, being intentional, and being disciplined.

    Amen!!!

1Peter 4:12-13, “Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you; but rejoice to the extent that you partake of Christ’s sufferings, that when His glory is revealed, you may also be glad with exceeding joy.”
