James 1:21-24 NLT

21 So get rid of all the filth and evil in your lives, and humbly accept the word God has planted in your hearts, for it has the power to save your souls.

22 But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. 23 For if you listen to the word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror. 24 You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like.

This passage is very clear and straightforward, anything that will pull us away from our relationship with God can be considered filth and evil.

Anything that puff’s us up, makes us feel like we are better than others or the greatest thing God ever created, can also be considered filth and evil.

Or anything we do out of the goodness of our heart that is now causing us to seek the praise of man, rather than God, lets throw those in that pile of filth too.

If you’re not sure if certain things you do lead you into one of these three categories, just as your self a simple question.

Self, does this make me want to grow closer to God or farther from God?

Why is this important?

Because, if we are claiming to be Christians, and we claim to love God, we claim to read our Bibles, then we must start to listen and obey the things we read from God’s Word. We must apply them into our lives. It is a process, it takes time, it takes sacrifice and it takes work: But there must be fruit, and evidence of change!

If we do not, look at verse 22, it says; we are only fooling ourselves!

Step 1.

Pray and ask God for wisdom and knowledge of Him.

James 1:5 NLT

If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking.

Proverbs 1:7

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge,
But fools despise wisdom and instruction.

This only becomes possible when we really work at verse 21 above. If we are not getting rid of filth and wickedness, and accepting His Word with humbleness, then its pointless.

Step 2.

Read your Bibles.

Hebrews 4:12

For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.

Men the Word of God, combined with humble prayer and repentance has the power divide everything in you. God’s Word becomes alive, and will constantly challenge you in every facet of your life. If the Word is not challenging you, if the Word is not cutting you, something is wrong! Let it cut you up, it’s painful and you will not like it, but oh it is the greatest thing to cut out the filth and wickedness from our heart, mind and lives. But, remember this process never ends, you have never arrived until God calls you home. It is a life journey of dying to self, and living for Christ!

James 2:17: “Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.” We must be doers of what the Bible teaches us so that by our works our faith is made perfect (James 2:22).
