Is your faith working with your works?

James 2: 21-22

21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar? 22 Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect?

Good Morning Men!

I hope and pray that the joy of the Lord finds, restores and strengthens all of you in the name of Jesus! We must really cling to Word of the Lord in the good times and the bad times men. His Word is life.

This morning I started a study in the book of James, and I wanted to share on this verse today.

There is so much to the story referenced in the verse above. If you have not read it I encourage you to do so. The story starts in Genesis 18, jumps to chapters 21 and 22.

Basically Isaac was the son God promised to at the time Abram (before God changed his name to Abraham) in his old age. Abraham finally receives the promised son at the age of 100. However God calls Abraham in Genesis 22 to sacrifice this promised son. Abraham obeys, heads to the mountain the Lord determined and in the attempt of killing (as God commanded) his promised son, God provides an alternative.

And God tells Abraham in Genesis 22:12

And He said, “Do not lay your hand on the lad, or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me.”

God continued to exalt and promise amazing blessings over Abraham because of his faithfulness.

But let’s break down what the verse means now that we have the context.

Abraham is called our father, including me and you if we have put our faith in Jesus Christ, because of the promise spoken in Genesis 12:1-3.

In order for Abraham to have been justified by this “work”, he must have first heard from the Lord. Which he did, in Genesis 22:2 God directly tells Abraham what the Lord wants him to do.

You and I must remember that if the Lord is not calling us to do something, It is not the Lord.

You might be asking, How do I know if it’s the Lord?

Well today primarily God will speak to us through His Word. His Word is alive and sharper than any two-edged sword. In the days of Abraham God spoke directly to certain men. In the days of the prophets, God spoke through the prophets. Today, God speaks to us from His Word.

If you are not reading His Word, God cannot speak as clearly. Is God limited to this? Absolutely not! But God desires to speak through His Word to us, and in order to do that, we must spend time in it.

Once Abraham had the Word of the Lord, he acted. Genesis 22:3 says, “he rose early in the morning“, basically indicating, he didn’t waste time fighting God like I know I do many times.

Abraham was questioned by his son, about what was going on, and for very good reason. However Abraham answers in Genesis 22:8, “God will provide“.

How can Abraham have such faith!?

Because he knows what the Lord told him and he is standing on it!

Without the confirmed Word of the Lord, we are not standing on faith. We are not standing on solid ground.

One way I always know God is calling me to something is because it is never easy. It takes me stepping out of my comfort zone and trusting in Him because of the discomfort, anxiety or pride that I have to battle.

So here is the recipe: First we need His Word, second we need the obedience to act in faith and acting exactly according to His Word, and lastly we must trust in the Lord no matter how bad the situation may look.

May this Word bring you strength and comfort as it has given me great strength and comfort. In the name Jesus, the risen Savior of the world!

Amen!!! Faith and works go hand in hand. Faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead (James 2:17).
