Test the Spirits

September 9, 2014

1 John 4:1-6

Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this you know the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God, and every spirit that does not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God. And this is the spirit of the Antichrist, which you have heard was coming, and is now already in the world.

You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. They are of the world. Therefore they speak as of the world, and the world hears them. We are of God. He who knows God hears us; he who is not of God does not hear us. By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error.

Good Morning Men!

The other day at work I had a few discussions with two brothers in our ministry about this verse. I thought it would be good to share with all of you.

The spiritual realm is very real, the Bible makes that very clear. I’m sure many of us have also experienced, or felt situations that felt supernatural. The point of this devotion is to make very clear, as verse 6 says; there is only two types of spirits: the spirit of truth and the spirit of error.

The spirit of truth is another name for the Holy Spirit. Also we know that the Bible says: let God be true and every man a liar (Romans 3:4). So if God didn’t say it, we must as verse 1 says, test it. Test it against God’s Word. If Jesus Christ is not at the center, if what you feel, heard or think is not found in God’s Word…then it should be very easy to discern where it is coming from.

The spirit of error, can also be translated as the spirit of deception. The Bible refers to satan as the ruler of the world, meaning earth. Satan and his minions are very active and very present and their whole purpose in life is set on getting you distracted and deceived from the truth of God’s Word. They are imitators of light, because they are fallen angels. They may appear to have good things, but test these things. Test them to see if Jesus Christ the risen savior and Lord is at the center.

Lets remember Galatians 6:7

Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.

It’s all about Jesus. The entire Bible, both Old and New Testament, point to Jesus. Without Jesus, we have nothing. Wisdom comes from the LORD.

    • Amen mike!
      As dr. Chuck missler says:

The New Testament is the Old Testament revealed, the Old Testament is the New Testament concealed!
