All Your Heart, Soul, and Strength

July 27, 2014

Deuteronomy 6:4-5

“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one! You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength…”

So you say you’re a Christian, you say you believe in God, you say you believe in Jesus; right?

Well are you living up to this commandment that God gave through Moses to His people, the Israelites?

This is actually a trick question, because humanly speaking it is impossible live up to this commandment. Although it is impossible, it is the foundation of a faith building relationship with God Almighty, and a saving faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Some of you may be thinking, how is this relevant for me? It was spoken to the people of Israel some 4,000 years ago!

But wait, Jesus came to this earth some 2,000 years ago and recited this same verse when He was questioned about what is the greatest commandment for man to live by.

Matthew 22:37

Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind…”

Pretty powerful stuff! Of all the ways and responses Jesus could have handled this inquiry He chose this.

Why is this important? I’m glad you asked!

Jesus is showing us that God must be first in our lives. We must love God more than anything on this earth, more than our wives, our children, our careers, our houses and possessions.

When we love God in this way, everything else falls into place.

Here’s a few examples.

We know God teaches us to love our wives as Christ loves the church, so when we love God with all our heart, we work on loving our wives more, and being the caring, loving husbands that God calls us to be.

We know God tells us to offer our first fruits, the fruit of our labor, or in today’s terminology; tithes. Why? Because God knows how attached we are to money and the things money does for us. So God is basically saying: Do you trust me, that I will provide for you? Do you believe that what you have is from me anyways, so why are you holding on to it like you earned it on your own merit?

We know God desires us to serve others, to give to the needy, the poor, the broken and the lost. So in loving God with all we are, we not only look for ways to be a blessing to others in the abundance that we have, but we don’t turn a deaf ear and blind eye when it smacks us in the face!

God doesn’t say we have to do these things to earn His Love. When you love someone with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength it comes easy; you do these things because you love them, you want to please them and you enjoy loving them the way they love you.
