This is a continuation in the Grow in Him series, sorry it has taken me so long to come back to it. But hopefully this has a timely message for many of us. To review the first message in this series you may click here.

Our last message ended on knowledge. This knowledge is focused on the knowledge of Jesus Christ. However we must understand that any knowledge can be dangerous for us.

Going to college and obtaining multiple degrees and tons of “knowledge” can be dangerous because it puffs us up. Knowledge tells our little brains that we know best, we know more than most and therefore we don’t need to really listen to what you have to say.

This is where self-control comes in. Self-control is a valuable skill to have and to use in everything that we do. It is all the more valuable when it comes to sharing the good news of Jesus Christ. Why is this so much more important with God and our relationship with Him?

Because we are dealing with lives and eternity.

Many times when Christians grow in the first three traits (faith, virtue knowledge), there is a big hurdle of self-righteousness that needs to be overcome. I believe that is why self-control comes right after it. Without this self-control the next few steps can be accomplished, but they will not have the effect God has pre-destined.

Perseverance comes next because at this stage of the game, fatigue and burnout may try to creep in. There is a list of why these types of feelings may come in, primarily because walking with Jesus Christ takes effort and work, and the fruit of that work takes time to produce. In fact it takes way longer than we ever hoped or wanted. So we must persevere. We must press on towards the goal and prize that Our Lord Jesus Christ has laid before us.

Our next trait of fruit to grow in is Godliness. This comes from the Greek word eusebeia. Which means reverence, respect,  or piety towards God. When I read the definition of this word, it speaks about humility. True Godliness doesn’t parade itself in a self-righteous stroll. It reflects itself as genuine humility, and meekness.

This humility is strengthened, when we have self-control over our flesh and our spirit. When we not only are growing in faith, virtue and knowledge daily. But also when we can in truth, push through our struggles. When we can be transparent in our brokenness and need for the power and grace of Jesus Christ.

This in turn helps us to persevere, because there are others looking for strength, whether our wife, our kids or family and co-workers. We persevere because we know that there is more to overcoming our struggles than just ourselves. Overcoming our struggles in Christ benefits all those around us, and those we may strengthen in the future. The Bible teaches us that we are comforted, so that we may comfort others (2 Corinthians 1:4).

Godliness will be the bridge through this process. It will carry us through because as we start to impact lives around us for Christ, we see that it’s not us, its God. We see that God is so amazing and so loving and so mindful of even the smallest details. The bigger God gets in our heart, the smaller we get. The smaller we get next to God, the deeper awe, humility and pure reverence we have for HIM.

This is Godliness.
