Knowledge + Understanding = Calm Spirit in Jesus

June 17, 2014

Proverbs 17:27-28

27 He who has knowledge spares his words,
And a man of understanding is of a calm spirit.

This verse jumped out at me this morning for one reason, and then as I was praying and preparing to write, something else jumped out at me.

Look at the first line, “He who has knowledge spares his words”. Does that make sense? It shouldn’t. Think about your average person that has a lot of knowledge, whether it be in a certain skill set, or subject.

Personally it seems a rare commodity, where men with a wealth of knowledge spare their words. Usually it seems men with knowledge, can’t stop talking about what they know or what they have done.

So I believe the clarification comes in the following verse.

“A man of understanding is of a calm spirit.”

So I see these two as a package deal, the fruit of this package is a calm spirit. A spirit that is firm in faith, and belief. A spirit that is not tossed around with different doctrines, actions or beliefs. Only with this calm spirit is a man of knowledge able to spare his words. Or basically keep quiet when there is no need to talk. While everyone else is talking, and trying to prove their worth and knowledge.

A man who possesses knowledge can only spare his words if there is a deep understanding. An understanding that is so deep to calm the spirit. To leave a man in a state of calmness where he doesn’t have to prove himself. He doesn’t have to showcase his knowledge. Basically a man who is comfortable in who the Lord has made him to be.

Men lets work to lead by example. The Bible teaches us to grow in the knowledge of Jesus Christ (2 Peter 3:18), this isn’t so we can become puffed up. But rather to grow in understanding in how much our Lord Jesus Christ really loves us.

Jesus Christ is our model to follow and live our lives by. The most humble, loving caring man to ever walk this earth. Yet had the power of creation at His breath. Look at what John 1:1,14 says:

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God…14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

Jesus Christ in the flesh, here on earth had the knowledge of creation, the understanding of the heavens, yet died for me and you. Jesus kept his mouth shut when being falsely accused by sinful, prideful men.

Seek Jesus with all your heart men. Pray for wisdom, God will grant it (James 1:5). Jesus is standing at the door of your heart, knocking (Revelation 3:20). He just needs you to open that door. The door of your heart to believe in Him, trust Him, follow Him and live your life for Him, and you can do it more and more everyday! There is no limit to God’s Grace, Love and Wisdom.

Lord I do pray for wisdom, understanding and guidance as we journey on through this life. Give us the strength and courage to stand and live for You. Give us that beautiful peace that surpasses all understanding. In Jesus’ powerful name I pray, amen.
