Cleanse ourselves from all filthiness…

June 1, 2014

2 Corinthians 7:1

Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

2cor 7 1

Something really cool that I wanted to point out this morning. The verse above is about cleansing ourselves. I wanted to try to point at three different types of cleansing that takes place in the live of the believer.

– The first Cleansing  can only take place from God. When we put our faith and trust in the Lord Jesus, He alone can wash us and cleanse of our sins.

However this is not the cleansing that the Apostle Paul is writing about here.

– The second cleansing, is where we take part in the cleansing of the flesh. This takes place when we start to remove things from our life that don’t align with the purity and holiness of God. Why is this important? Well the old saying of, “what you put in, is whats gonna come out!”

– The third cleansing, is the cleansing of the spirit. The filth of the Spirit are the things that go on in our heart, that most people will not see. Things like; self-righteousness, pride, hypocrisy and the like.

The filthiness of the spirit can be much more devastating to our walk with Christ. The filth of the flesh is noticed by many, and depending on the depth of these actions we usually cannot hide them to long.

However the filth of the spirit can only be cleansed when we take a good, honest, hard look at ourselves and soften our heart to them.

In the previous chapter, God gives us a promise when we separate ourselves from the filth of this world.

2 Corinthians 6:17-18

Therefore “Come out from among them And be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, And I will receive you.” “I will be a Father to you. And you shall be My sons and daughters, Says the Lord Almighty.”

Wow! What a promise: God says “I will receive you.” !! “I will be a Father to you.!!”

Men, if you have been struggling in your walk, if you desire more of the Lord but just cannot seem to get over that hump, then lets cleanse ourselves. We all have junk that we can get rid of, some of it is obvious and on the surface, while others of us have to dig a little deeper and uproot some nasty stuff in our hearts.

The promise is before you men, now it is up to you to make the changes: “Be Separate”…”And I will receive you.”…”Says the Lord Almighty”

Heavenly Father I do pray that you will strengthen us and deliver us from all the temptations of the flesh that we so often get tangled up in. You alone can deliver us from our sins, struggles, and addictions. I thank you and praise you in JESUS’ mighty name, amen.
