John 20

John 20:12

And she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain.

Jesus-Resurrection-17

The other night in our Bible Study we covered John 20. This chapter focuses on the empty tomb of Jesus after His resurrection, and the first few appearances of Jesus to Mary and the disciples.

For the disciples this had to have been a very confusing time. They walked with Jesus, saw His Power, saw His miracles and heard all His Words. Many of those words confirmed the scriptures and illustrated Him to be the long-awaited Messiah of the Jewish people.

However now He was physically dead, they then, go to His tomb and His body is not there.

In our group we really tried to put ourselves there, and grapple with some of the thoughts and struggles these men must have been fighting with. Everything from confusion, fear and maybe even anger.

We also related their mindset to us today.

How, when we don’t see the results we want from God, we start to harden our hearts towards Him. We want answers now. We want solutions now, and when we don’t get it, we stop praying, we stop reading our Bibles and go back to trying to handle it our own way.

In this chapter Mary, was an example of how we should not only live, but how we should pray. Mary chose to go to the tomb early.

Why?

We don’t know for sure, but she rose early to go seek her Lord. When she didn’t find Him, she stayed. Peter and John left when they didn’t get an answer, yet Mary remained. She was broken-hearted, but she remained, she kept seeking.

Not only did two angels appear to her, but the Lord Himself appeared to Mary!

Don’t give up on God. He is there, He is waiting, He stands at the door of your heart and knocks. But He wants genuine devotion.  Not temporary, half-hearted devotion, that will fade once things get better or you get what you’re looking for.

Love Him with all your heart, soul and mind.

Heavenly Father, give us a heart for you. An unwavering heart that will weather the storms with you as the captain of the ship. Teach us to let go of our selfish desires, fears, insecurities and worries and to hold on to YOU! In Jesus name, AMEN!

Amen. I can only imagine the hurt and frustration they must have felt when they saw the empty tomb. Maybe even abandonment. All of these negative feelings quickly turned to joy when they realized Jesus was alive and that He had risen from the dead just like He said.

    • With the deep knowledge and hope they had in the Messiah, we really cannot imagine that initial let down they must have felt.
