Idols in your Heart

February 4, 2014

James 4:7

7 Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. 8 Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

Declaring Jesus as Lord of your life is completely different from saying you believe in Jesus. Believing in Jesus, is actually somewhat easy, in fact, even the demons believe – and tremble (James 2:19)!

Anything in our heart that takes precedence over our relationship with the Lord is an idol. These idols come in all different shapes, sizes and colors. We must honestly search our heart, our lives, our checkbooks, and our attitudes for idols, constantly!

The Bible makes it very clear that every Christian has a great and powerful enemy, the devil. The Bible describes him as a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour (1 Peter 5:8). He knows the flaws and weaknesses of man, and is hell bent on destroying man. The devil is not stupid, he does not make it obvious of his schemes and attacks in your life until death, and destruction are full bore in your life.

Get rid of the idols in your heart, turn from those sinful ways. Ask God to help you turn from those things, and take the necessary steps to obey God’s gentle nudging in your heart. Ephesians 4:27 describes how anger in our heart gives the devil a foothold; well, all these other idols give him a foothold also. Until you completely turn from these idols, and turn in complete submission to God. The devil will always have a foothold to drag you back down.

Here are a few steps to apply this:

1. Be in the Word everyday. God’s Word, if we allow it will convict, cleanse, guide and renew us.

2. Be honest and humble, and selfless in your prayers. Pray constantly. Praise Constantly. Worship Constantly. He has given us so much that we should adore and be in reverence towards.

3. Meditate on God’s Word and the Promises of His Word. Don’t focus on the world and things of this world.

4. Love and Serve others. True J.O.Y is found by putting Jesus first, Others second, and Yourself Last.

Heavenly Father, may you stir every heart, and every eye that reads this to remove the idols from their heart. To make it a common practice to purify their heart. May you stir us all to know you and desire you more than anything this world has to offer. In the name above all names, Jesus, we pray; Amen!
