Mercy and Truth

January 31, 2014

Proverbs 3:3

Let not mercy and truth forsake you;
Bind them around your neck,
Write them on the tablet of your heart…

Life is filled with challenges. We have personal challenges, family challenges. We have good seasons of joy and happiness, and we have seasons of desperation and sorrow. Many of these situations we have no control over. If you believe in the Lord God Almighty with all your heart, and trust Him with all you are these trials, although difficult can be taken in stride and viewed as building blocks. Blocks that build you, not break you.

However sometimes we bring trials upon ourselves by our words or actions. This verse has become one of my most important tools in my toolbox of living. When we are faced in difficult situations, with pressure, pride, greed, selfishness, covetousness etc we many times are tempted to forsake mercy and truth.

At the very start of my marriage, I was dabbling in another relationship. Long story short, I was caught by my very soon to be wife. The pain and devastation was enormous. But I had a choice, cover lies with lies, and hide it for as long as I can. Or come clean, confess my wrongs, and deal with the consequences. Praise God, that He strengthened me to stand on Mercy and Truth. I came clean with everything, it was the hardest for both of us. I did it with mercy and gentleness. Now, All Glory to God because of this, our marriage is built on the solid foundation of mercy and truth.

Forsaking mercy  and truth will backfire on you 100% of the time. The fruit of those actions may not spoil for days, weeks or even years but you can be sure the fruit of forsaking mercy and truth will not be pleasant.

When this spoiled fruit does bear itself, it will provide another opportunity to either stand on mercy and truth or hide under guilt and shame, making this cycle spin rapidly out of control.

Sometimes truth is very painful, many times it is very difficult,  but when we cover it and season it with mercy and gentleness it will always produce fruit that can be enjoyed by many.

If you desire this, just honestly ask the Lord, keep asking, keep seeking and live it!

Heavenly Father strengthen me to not give in to the pressures of this world, to live in fear or shame. But to stand on truth no matter what. Help me to be merciful and gentle, but never forsaking truth. In Jesus mighty name I pray, AMEN!!
