Weeding out the Weeds of Life

“He told many stories in the form of parables, such as this one: “Listen! A farmer went out to plant some seeds. As he scattered them across his field, some seeds fell on a footpath, and the birds came and ate them. Other seeds fell on shallow soil with underlying rock. The seeds sprouted quickly because the soil was shallow. But the plants soon wilted under the hot sun, and since they didn’t have deep roots they died. Other seeds fell among thorns that grew up and choked out the tender plants. Still other seeds fell on fertile soil, and they produced a crop that was thirty, sixty, and even a hundred times as much as had been planted!”                  Matthew 13:3-8 NLT

As I was picking some weeds this morning our Heavenly Father, brought me some refreshing yet challenging enlightenment. The parable of the farmer planting seeds came to my mind (Matt. 13:3-23). However God’s enlightenment this morning was not so much of the seeds being planted but more so of the weeds among the plants.

In my small garden of just a few orchids, ginger, tomatoes, and strawberries, the Lord showed me something very powerful and something I want to be aware of in my daily walk. In this short time of weeding God brought so many revelations to my eyes it’s hard to put them all in words, but I will try my best to fill you in.

The FIRST thing was when we don’t spend time in our garden, weeds will grow. The more time away, the more weeds will grow. God showed me, this is like our spirit life. The longer we spend away from prayer and God’s Word the more weeds (sin) sprout and take root in our lives.

The SECOND thing God showed me is these weeds in my garden block or steal nutrients from my plants. In life sin steals the blessings and glory that God wants to reveal in our life. The more sin we have present in our life, the harder it is for us to fulfill the purpose God has for us.

The THIRD thing is all the weeds in my garden are in different places. Some weeds were in clear view, while others were hidden under branches, some were alongside the walls of my garden, and some were out of sight behind the bigger plants. God showed me that this is exactly how sin is in our lives. Some sin in our life is on the surface, very clear for others to see; while some sin is hidden from people that don’t know us well, maybe we are different at home then we are at work. We also have our deep dark sin that we “think” nobody else knows…Hah! Boy are we funny! We forget that the creator of the universe, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords knows all!

For at just the right time Christ will be revealed from heaven by the blessed and only almighty God, the King of all Kings and Lord of all Lords. 1 Tim.6:15 NLT

You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed. How precious are your thoughts about me, O God. They cannot be numbered! I can’t even count them; they outnumber the grains of sand! Psalm 139:16-18 NLT

The FOURTH part was some weeds were bigger, some were smaller, some had weak roots while others had strong deep roots. Some weeds were tangled in the plants root system, making them difficult to uproot without possibly damaging the plant. Some roots traveled underground to other weeds, making a web of roots, which of course were the hardest to take out. How true this is in our lives! The more we give in to sin the more it will grow, right? The longer we ignore certain types of sin, the bigger it gets, the roots grow deeper. This may lead or open doors to other sin, in fact they will lead us into other sin, as we all can attest to that is a fact no matter what you call it!

The FIFTH and final point is after I had gone through the garden and pulled all the big stuff out, there were still tons of little weeds poking out. Some I couldn’t really get to but most just needed me to invest a lot of time to completely remove all. God shows that sin is endless and will always try to force its way into our lives.

For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.                   Romans 3:23 NLT

We need to spend the time to always be pulling the weeds out of our life before the roots grow deep, produce others, or tangle in our main purpose God has planned for us.

We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps.

Proverbs 16:9 NLT

Although my friends we do not need to worry we serve a God that abounds in Love. We just need to be honest with ourselves and with God,

But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. For if you listen to the word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror. You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like.

James 1:22-24 NLT

We need to do our part of being equipped for God’s purpose and glory. Let’s strengthen ourselves so we can strengthen each other, so together as one church and one body we can do what we were sent to do…Give Hope to the Hopeless and Reach the Lost!

Dear Heavenly Father, thank for sending your son to pay the ultimate price for our sins. Thank you for your never ending forgiveness, help us to weed out the sin in our life so we can please you by purifying our lives daily. In your mighty name we all pray Amen!

God Bless.
